Anyone know what the laws are in colombia are about living with a girlfriend and how long it takes before they have rights to any assests in colombia.  Somewhere I had heard two years but thought that this seems like  a pretty short period of time.  Appreciate anyone that knows anything about this situation.  Thanks

I'm told 2  years of cohabitation is pretty nuch like being married, they get half your Colombian assets.Anyone getting involved in anything close to that should get Colombiann legal advice. The other thought would be to have no assets in Colombia. And there are stories of women faking cohabitation,so better to be carefull.
Many Colombians do not bother to get married but are considered married because of cohabitation.

The colombian law says two years. But, the courts in colombia...well...they leave something to be desired. She could live with you only a year and go to court with her mother and friends to testify that she lived with you for two or more years. If the judge believes her than she will be intitled to half of your assets.

I hear some colombianos that want to protect themselves will rent an apartment in her name and pay the rent every month even if she doesn't live in it just to use as protection against this kind of thing.

I'm not a lawyer. Hell, I'm not even Colombian so use my legal advice with caution.

Calipro,

I can see many advantages to living in Colombia.
In your opinion, what would be the disadvantages?
I have been in Colombia a total of 8 weeks this year.
Everyday is an adventure there.
How much time have you spent in country.
Do you like the country or only the ladies?

Hey Cabo,

I decided to make LA my new home and I'm presently living in Medellin, Colombia and really enjoy it.  Besides the lack of normal type of work available there are other hassles to deal with.  Some of them I plan on writing about in a future thread but here are a few more disadvantages that come to mind:

1. Obtaining a permanent visa takes a little work. (Either pensionado or business visa.)
2. Adjusting to the culture and customs.  There are many that I counted on and many others I had no idea about.
3. The dangers that are evident here.  Everything from getting scammed to not being able to travel freely within the country (kidnapping/extortion).
4. Getting income into the country can be a little tricky if you want to purchase a high ticket item such as an apartment.
5. The red tape that one comes across.
6. Pollution.
7. Traffic congestion.
8. The cost of certain things is much more expensive than in the States.

I'm sure there are other drawbacks but IMO the benefits far outweigh any of the disadvantages of living here.  I can think of three just at the next table from where I write this.  All in their mid to late twenties, all having long hair, one brunette, one blonde (natural I might add) and one with jet black hair.  Each with beautiful figures.

Pablo,

I know exactly what you are talking about. Even going to "Olympica" or "Ley" is exciting because some young super model is smiling at you, while holding a box of candels that are on sale.
The town I live in has many of the problems you mentioned and the girls tend to be fat and have 3 or 4 kids with some guy who is currently in custody on varios narcotic charges.
I would rank the cities in Colombia as follows:
1.Cartagena - Great beaches and nightlife
2.Barranquilla - nice malls and pools
3.Medellin - I here it is beautiful
4.Cali - I am not interested in "professional" agency girls who are receiving funds from three gringo "novios" at the same time.
5.Bogata - If I liked cold weather,I would visit Minnesota four times per year.

How would you rate the cities there?
Do you like the culture of Colombia or just the girls?

Yep, there are beautiful ladies wherever you go in Colombia.  I would also include the other SA countries as well.  There just isn't any comparison to what's available here and what’s available back in the States.

I haven't been to Cali or Barranquilla but I have spent time in the other cities you listed.

I think Cartagena's beaches aren't that great, in fact, I think they are mediocre at best.  If you were talking about the islands just offshore, then yes I'd agree with you, those beaches are very nice.  Also, the historical aspect of the city is very interesting.

Bogotá is cold in comparison to the rest of Colombia but 70+ degree weather isn't all that bad.

Medellin IS very beautiful especially the city's greatest asset...the lovely Paisas.  I'm enjoying living here very much.

Yes, I do enjoy Colombia's culture as well as the beautiful ladies.

The disadvantages of living in Colombian would be trying to work or do business.

I spend about two months a year in Cali. But, I'm going to try and get three months off work next year.

I like the country, culture and women.
