I will help you stand on your own two (2) feet so you no longer have to blame all your misfortunes on white racism and rely upon preferences, quotas and set-asides.  In the future, when you encounter any difficulty, simply ask yourself, WWDSD (what would Dallas Steve Do)?  This will help build your confidence so that you can function as an independent human being rather than simply as a member of a favored group.  And now Cybear, let me close with these words which are anathema to you:  "Equal opportunity for all - preferences for none."  "When Burbuja comes to town - all the women come around."

If you feel you're getting a bad deal from the Affirmative Action program, then quite frankly, tough sh*t.

In case you don't know, the average Black and hispanic person doesn't give a damn about you and your types' opinions on civil rights issues- never have, never will.  Go find an activist and then maybe you can engage him/her in a futile arguement.

This whining and crying about Affirmative Action makes you seem weak, and perhaps you are.  But hey, if debating the issue allows you a means to vent, to find others who share in your opinion so that you can all share a group hug and feel important about yourselves, then goody for you.

I'm amused and those of you who constantly debate civil rights/social growth issues.  Such a waste of time and breath.  Bottom line is some people are lazy, some motivated.  Some are smart, some aren't.  Some get breaks, some don't.  Some are racist, some aren't.  Color code it if you'd like.

So, if you're bitter about the guy who's skin is a bit darker than yours, then you should either join the Klan and bomb a church or take a deep breath and get over it.  Anything in between is crybaby-fodder for the likeminded.

Let me "decode" your message:

Black people: Most lazy, some motivated. Most dumb, some smart.
A few get breaks, but most do not deserve them. Most hate white people, a few do not.

Why would I be bitter about someone that has a darker complexion or do you mean lighter complexion (presumably white)?

I would join the Klan, but like you, they do not believe in true equal opportunity. Do you wear a white sheet or a Brooks Brothers suit to meetings? Your reference in jest to the church bombing that killed three little Blacks girls in Birmingham, Alabama is indicative of the mean-spiritedness and insensitivity that your "type" displays on this board.

Guess what?  We both attacked Troy over the same post.  Of course, my attack was much more rational, insightful and eloquent than yours.  Anyway, I think you misunderstood what he said.  You attacked someone who was attempting, in a very clumsy way, to agree with you!  But that's what I like to see - a little dissension in the ranks.

I think you were correct earlier when you said that this matter has now been thouroughly discussed and no one is going to change anyone else's mind.

Please take the political quiz which I reference above.  I'm curious to see how you score.  I have a feeling you may surprise others - and yourself.

Contrary to your self-promoting posts, you are neither a genius, the most eloquent, or the most rational person on this board. You are a conceited self-righteous pompous ass. Now get the calvary (bka the good old boys) to get your back as you so eloquently always do. You must be near, I smell the stench of shit.
Bring your best, Freakboy Booby.

I really appreciate your well-reasoned arguments, factual presentations and bellicose diatribe. I guess debating the merits of an issue are "futile", as you put it.  If that's the case, however, why are you here?  By the way, Troy, just in case you didn't notice, we were debating Cybear, not your "average black of hispanic".  But thanks for clueing me in on what they "don't give a damn about".  After all, I'm always interested in the statistical data that an authority such as yourself can analyze for us and then present in an easy-to-read summary fashion.

At least Cybear, especially in his latter posts, has engaged in civil, cogent debate.  Of course you too are very convincing.  What almost swung me over to your position was the phrase "tough sh*t".  I only wish I thought of that.

I think, Troy, that you are nothing more than a poster man (I don't want to offend you) for the intolerant and indolent intellectually bankrupt pc movement.

But as a man of peace, Troy, I am here to help you.  I will respond to your hate with love.  Please, stop your periodic incursions into Latin Landia and go back to the Asian Board immediately.  There is a place called Shangrila where the politics are looney left beyond belief and best of all, NO DISSENT IS TOLERATED!  I have even signed you up at an agency!  You do speak North Korean, don't you?

Good comment. The rest of this thread is pure shit and identifies the bundle of idiots that buy into this nonsense. Blame someone else, the american way. Some poor white guy didn't get a job, blame AA. Some black can't get in a university, blame someone else. I believe most of you are full of it!  Some of you f'ers need to stay in the US and wallow in misery. Such bull and nothing that begins to tie in with the purpose of the list.

I was only an occasional reader and poster to this board. My few posts involved what I thought the Forum was about: information on Latin American countries, culture, women, and relationships. It came as a shock last week when I saw how some writers cavalierly used nigger and other derogatory words. Did the persons writing those words think for a moment that another person might find the words offensive? I guess it did not matter to them. However, it did matter to me and I responded.

I would disagree with you that this discussion is totally off the subject of this board. I have traveled to Latin America and elsewhere in the world. Many people in other countries told me that I did not act as if I was from the United States. I asked them why and they said that I was not pushy, arrogant, and disrespectful of them and their culture like "most Americans".

I will never forget an incident at a restaurant in Thailand. There were several people from the United States sitting at a table. The waitress (who spoke little English) took the orders, however she could not understand one of the customers. After a couple of failed attempts to place her order, the customer blurted out, "Why don't you learn some god*** English". Does not this exemplify the "Ugly American"? I thought to myself why did not that person learn some basic Thai since she was in Thailand, not Chicago, Illinois! If persons blatantly denigrate readers of this board, how will they display these attitudes towards others when traveling outside the United States?

Many parts of the world do not like Americans or the US government. Perhaps we cannot immediately change US foreign policy, but we can change the way we treat others and the manner in which they perceive us as a people. It is no better place to start than at home.

Peace.

[This message has been edited by Cali James]

Since we're talking about it, what really is affirmative action?  We'd probably get a lot of different answers on this one but for me AA is simply one group of people receiving a preference over another group.  In the work force, affirmative action is often times hiring certain groups of people based on different criteria than the other applicants.  I learned that I got my first job because of affirmative action.  I didn't quit mind you but it rubbed me the wrong way that my so called "minority-status" played a part in my hiring.

At Universities, affirmative action often means, Asian students have to score higher than white students on their ACT exams and white students higher than blacks.    Asian students are passed over for students with lower test scores.

Why do some groups of people receive preferences over other groups?  The most common reason given is that AA is a tool to level the playing field between different groups and to make right the injustices done to these groups in the past.   That has a nice sound to it initially but if you really think about it, it institutionalizes preferences and favoritism.  You don't right the wrongs done in the past by wronging another group of people who had nothing to do with the original injustices.  The Asian student who is overlooked was not alive 200 hundred years ago when slavery flourished.  He did not participate in it in any way and to penalize him, is to continue the cycle of injustice.  In 50 years, will we be giving preferences to Asians because of the discrimination they are receiving now.  Think about it.

Another thing to seriously consider,  when you institutionalize preferences and by doing so allow for one group to receive something at the expense of another, you set yourself down an uncertain and potentially treacherous path. Today the preferred groups are primarily blacks, disabled persons, and women.  Who will they be tomorrow?  What will be the preferences?  Are you so certain the preferences will be benign?

The people of our nation have participated in many injustices. The way to right the wrongs, is first to acknowledge them and then to create and enforce laws like the 14th amendment, that provide equal protection of the law.   The  14th amendment provides for EQUAL protection not preferred.

I applaud your raising of the XIV Amendment and acknowledge your admission of injustice in the United States. I would support your position wholeheartedly if it spoke in a meaningful way about correcting the pervasive system of discrimination in hiring, education, and housing. History has shown that the XIV Amendment could not address by itself  inequality in the United States. Numerous acts (Voting Rights, Civil Rights Act, etc.) were necessary to attempt to bring about the result that the writers of the XIV Amendment sought. In this context, one should view affirmative action, and related programs that pass constitutional muster as giving teeth to the XIV Amendment. There may come a day when such measures are no longer necessary and the XIV Amendment can stand-alone. Unfortunately, as a nation we are not at that point.

I agree Phoenix. Not with your suggestion of censorship, but with the inference that we should turn the discussion to more pleasant and at times less controversial topics like latinas.

I did not initially generate this conversation, I only responded.
I think everyone knows where each other stands on the issues.
I respect all opinions even though I might not agree.

Peace.
