... in response to HELP!!!, posted by PECUS2 on Oct 29, 2002I think the one rule is the longer you are married the more you get screwed, and I don't mean literally.
Divorce laws vary from state to state.I would talk to a lawyer even if its a possibility to find out how to protect yourself.
I used to think a spousal visa was like a 2 year test drive, you need to sponsor her for her to stay. Not neccesarily so.With the right lawyer she can probably not only stay but collect alimony or a $ settlement. If it doesn't work you are better off if she just wants to go home. But if she is savy you could have trouble.
Check with a lawyer, but it might be good to not stay together past 2 years if its not going to work.
There are lots of tactics you could take if she is not savy.Tell her she has to go back.Buy her a one way ticket.Buy her a 2 way ticket but keep the return portion.Get her to leave the country and be out when the 2 year date comes up.Her visa expires and if she doesn't have the automatic extension you or she can get by filing she can't get back in the country.
I think she can cause you much less trouble from there than here.
Hopefully the local chicks haven't filled her in.Reminds me of an Eddie Murphy routine. He brings in a bride from Africa, the local chicks tell her she can get half. She says "Eddie,I want Haaalff."He says last month she was bare assed on a Zebra, now she wants half." Sorry, hard to ignore the humor.
Good luck,see a lawyer,protect yourself.
