Well, I just purchased my ticket to Cali. I will be there from Nov 20 to Dec 2. I haven't made my lodging arrangements yet. I will probably be staying at an agency, most likely Latin Encounters or at Suites Travelers. This is my first trip to LA so this is going to be an adventure the likes of which I haven't seen since my military days. The biggest obstacle that I am facing is language. I live in San Diego so I have learned some Spanish via osmosis but no where near enough to hold a conversation. I am studying Spanish via CD and I will enroll at a CC in January. My question is just how big an obstacle is this going to be. Am I wasting my time going to Cali? What are some things I can do ease the obstacles? I am a total newbie and I really appreciate the help I've received from this board.

Its good to speak spanish but don't let not speaking spanish stop you from going. If you waited untill you speak spanish well that could be a long time.I would stay at an agency that has translaters available when you meet girls. This will allow you to cover alot of imformation quickly. If you are interested in a girl you can then take her out without the translater.Hopefully she will speak a little english, like your little spanish.Get an hand held electronic translater. The Franklin spanish proffesor is good,it pronounces words and phrases, about $130.With this you can usually have alot of conversation, using the translater when needed.Of course a person translating is better and quicker, but you may not always  want one there with you.
I used to go to Diego's Il Cortile Italian restaurant in Cuidad Jardine. If we got stuck we could call Diego over to translate. He is also a great source of imformation on everything.
I did basically this and it worked fine for me.It required some patience but was fun and never uncomfortable. If you have important things to discuss that must be understood get a person to translate.
If you really want to learn spanish it is easier there immersed in the culture and language.Friends who have gone alot speak fair spanish.
Definetly don't let this keep you from the adventure of a lifetime and the woman of your dreams.

I don't think you're wasting your time, but I'd also recommend considering this just an initial trip to get your feet wet.  Not so much because of the language barrier, but simply because it's your first exereience.  Plan on multiple trips and don't rush into anything too soon.

I went to Mira Mar JC and took the first three semesters of Spanish in the evenings.  You'll learn way more that way than you would from studying on your own.  Make sure you copy the audio cassetes for the text book if they have them available in the library where ever you go.  I think it's important to learn good pronouciation in the very beginning so you don't re-inforce bad pronounciation through repetition right from the start.

My experience where I live (rural Fresno County, 70% Hispanic population) was that community college classes were really quite bad (particularly the first 2 semesters), and that finding someone to help you learn Spanish, particularly in the early stages, was much more difficult than one would think.  I started with the Pimsleur CDs, and am very grateful that I did so.  Although there were a lot of native and heritage speakers in my Spanish classes, no one (including the over-worked, underpaid instructor) had the time or inclination to help me with pronunciation.  I believe the Pimsleur tapes were a huge help in that regard.  Yesterday, in the course of a 30-minute conversation, a bilingual Mexican co-worker praised the heck out of my pronunciation.  Flattery?  I'm sure it was, to a degree.  But I suspect that the fact that I started with listen-and-repeat drills with a native speaker meant I wasn't practicing mistakes early on.  It's worth remembering, in a 20-person class, if each person speaks 3 minutes in class that's a whole hour session.

That's a very good point about looking at this as a learning experience. My expectations from this trip are minimal. The purpose of this trip is to enjoy the travel and find out what Calenas are like. I expect this could take 3 or 4 more trips over the next 6-9 months, at least I hope it doesn't take more than that. I signed up for a Russian class at Mesa this fall and the day after classes started I got a request from my Russian girlfriend for $800 for a cell phone. I dropped them both that day. There was no room in any Spanish classes so I will have to wait until January. In the mean time I will be doing tapes and CD's. I figure that I will at least pick up a little more.

Mr. Little,

1. Stay away from Russia.

2. Keep an open mind.  Only God and fate knows when you will meet the right one.  You may meet her on the plane down there.  Don't overlook a nice girl because it seems too soon.

What about advertising for a private tutor? That way the schedule might be more flexible and any native Spanish speaker could give you the jump start you need.

I have tried to continue to have an open mind about Margareth and LE, but she is really starting to piss me off.  And that is a feat all the way from Colombia.

I met my wonderful wife at LE, so it worked for me.  But not without some aggrivation and cost.  Shirley and the people in that agency are nice people, but Margareth is greedy and needs to learn to keep her fat mouth shut.

After I decided to marry my wife, Margareth tried to force an expensive wedding that she wanted to plan and profit from down our throat.  She even went so far as to tell my wife to rent a dress, and then tell me that she bought it, to pocket a little money.  She is simply a liar, and should not be trusted.

My wife early on started to think of my money as "our" money and felt there was no reason to waste it.  She politely told Margareth that she wanted to plan her own wedding, and Margareth told my wife that she was stealing money out of her pocket and had no right to do this. Margareth thinks of us gringos as her property in Cali... Margareth became increasingly nasty to my wife, and currently is spreading bad rumors about us as a couple.

At one point while I was down there, Margareth tried to get my wife to send her, her daughter, and my wife on a vacation to San Andreas, while I was back in the states getting my documents ready.  She implied to my wife that if I didn't agree, I was a cheapskate.  Of course my wife wanted to take our honey moon with ME, and not with Margareth and her daughter.  Margareth was trying to get me to foot the bill for this whole deal.

So fast forward almost a year to now.  I have heard through two different people this week that Margareth is bad mouthing my wife and our marriage to new gringos, and people in the agency.  She is telling people that my wife's ex-boyfriend came to our wedding as the notarios assistant and my wife has some evil plot stewing with her ex-boyfriend.  I really believe she is using this convaluted lie to try to set the guys up from the beginning to be afraid to let the girl plan her own wedding because of what might happen.  If she gets the guy to think that it is safer for him if Margareth plans it, then she won't lose anymore profitable weddings.

And I will say right now, that we would have considered letting Margareth plan our wedding if she would have given us a price on the package.  I was afraid to give her a blank check because who knows what kind of bill I would have been handed at the end of the party.  I asked for a price break down, and she wouldn't give it because she knows that then the guy can shop it and find out that he is paying the gringo tax.

I really don't give a crap what she says because it doesn't effect us in the least, but I am posting this to give you guys going down an idea about what kind of person you will be dealing with.  I know two other guys that have had similar nasty experiences when they refused to let Margareth gouge them on the big wedding.

I was a good customer and stayed at Latin Encounters almost a month.  I paid my bill, met my wife, and we are living happily ever after.  That is not enough for Margareth because she didn't get every last penney out of me that she could.  I have been an advocate for her agency in the past, but man she is making it difficult to be a good customer.

So the bottom line is that even if you meet the right girl at Latin Encounters, you don't know what is going to be said to her in Spanish when you turn around by the staff.  If you are not towing the line to her financial agenda, she will not hesitate to sabotage you.

Who needs that crap anyway.  Stop by LE, say hi to Shirley, check out the books, and then go over to Luz Amparos place and deal with someone with some integrity.

Oh Yea, I was a newbie and Margareth told me not to stay at the Aparta Rio because it was a favorite for bombings to scare me into not leaving the agency.  Lying again to keep her fingers in my wallet.  I stayed in that miserable noisy agency for almost a month because I didn't know better.  Geeez guys...go stay somewhere nice and relax.  Skip the agency accomodations.

I hope you at least got some kind of discount...at $69 per night it would make for an awfully expensive month

I met my fiancee at Latin Best and after that first meeting there we never went back....no reason to really when you think about it.  But I did mention to another agency owner that I was getting married and she quickly offered to help me out with the preparations. I knew she was looking to make a buck but so is everyone else in Cali for that matter.  I just kind of smiled, said thanks but my fiancee was handling the arrangements.

I think Celt has it right. From searching the archives it seems that everyone has a very strong opinion of Margareth. I have decided not to stay at LE as most of what I've read has advised against it. I am concerned about the ringer problem. How can I avoid them? There are about 10 women from her site that I would like to meet. Does she have a day rate? Any agency recommendations close to Suites Traveler?

Unless she has changed her strategy which I doubt there is NO day rate. You pay for a year membership no ifs ands or buts which last time I checked was $400. She offered me a discount for each American I could bring in who of course would pay full pop. A few years ago she said by signing at her agency I would also have access to the agency classycolombianladies in Barranquilla. It turned out I had access to their phone number and they had no reciprocal deal with her at all. The time or two I went back (drawn by pretty website girls) I felt when I sat down with her the same way you feel when you sit down with a salesman at your friendly new car dealer to go over the purchase contract. You just know you're in for a drubbing. I have been to most of the agencies and would return to any of them if I were still looking...cepting Margareth's.

Ok I stand corrected on the day rate. If you plan to use her services for more than four days it's cheaper to pay a years membership (unless that's gone up?) $85 a day sounds very expensive.

The last time I actually viewed the LE website about 6 months ago, it was $69 per night/ minimum 6 days stay. I will take your word on the $85 per day rate. I don't care to see the updated website. I personally know some of the girls on the website and many advertised girls are spoken for... so I don't bother anymore with that particular agency...
