I just heard an interesting story from my friend,a guy who has spent alot of time in Cali and knows lot of people.
A girl who is a in law relative of his wife is a green card shark. She wants a green card and any guy who can get her one will do.She has told her family this.Well a gringo got involved with her and is bringing her here.My friend decided to call the guy and warn him.He is a law enforcement type. The response? If you don't want big trouble don't ever call again.Talk about walking off a cliff and not wanting to be stopped.
Reminds me of a line from "when a man loves a woman" by Curtiss Mayfield."If she plays him for a fool,he's the last one to know, turn his back on his best friend if he put her down."

Howdy Pete,

I'd probably react in a similar way if some guy I did not know called me up literally out of nowhere to warn me about my fiancee.   If I knew the guy and had some basis to judge his credibility that would be one thing but I think I would be very skeptical of someone I did not know.  Maybe I've become cynical but I'd have little basis to tell whether the guy was in fact a good samaritan or rather someone looking to stir up problems.  My first inclination would be towards trouble causer.

ED,
I agree that would probably be the first reaction, but if you think about it a little more is somebody really going to make that call just to cause trouble?I think a prudent person should take it seriously after the first reaction.
Funny thing, the friend of whom I speak(you know him also) had a problem girl once and recieved warnings he chose to discount. In his case there were people who had motive to break them up.He talked of maybe hiring a private detective but never did, then caught her himself.

Don't think I'm making a generalization about all Latinos from Latin America who relocate to the USA, because I'm not. Only a few idiots of a very large segment of travellers to the USA try these sleezy games.

I've seen cases where acquiantances of mine (Latinos and fluent native Spanish speakers) married women from their home countries, and brought them here, but unfortunately got shafted by the woman who skipped out on them.

Another case was with a guy who's an American citizen, Puerto Ricano, who was approached before by women from Latin America to conviently marry so that the woman could stay. This guy told me both he and the woman realized it was only a marriage of convience, not love. He said there wouldn't have been an opportunity for sex even because the lady had another boyfriend here that wasn't a citizen.

Think about that,

Your friend must be an idiot. I can't even imagine calling somebody up to tell them a I heard from a friend that your wife or girlfriend is a green card shark.
I don't know about walking off a cliff and not wanting to be stopped. How about listening to a bunch of bull and buying it hook line and sinker.
It amazes me all the talk about green card sharks. I don't know how many women in the world can fool a guy for at least two years to get a green card. But, I bet it isn't many.
Never try to tell a guy some thing about his women that you think he doen't already know because only he knows how big the wet spot in the bed is.

You dont have to be in the US for two years to apply for a permanent green card.  You can get married in Colombia, come to the US and divorce 3 months later and she can immediately apply.  No two year waiting period.

I'm not sure if that is the case if she applies alone, but if you apply together it can be no sooner than 90 days before the 2 years is up.
As far as claiming abuse I think they want evidence. The term I was looking for was good faith,if she is found to have entered in to the marriage with good faith she gets to stay.I would think if she split quickly that would be hard to do.
As far as finding a new gringo every 2 years that may not be hard when she is in the US.Good Looking women can pretty much have their way here.
The other point is will the INS deport her if she loses the  argument?Technically they should, but they don't seem to be looking for people.

What do you think her chances of getting the green card will be.

I dont know.  It depends on her evidence.  There is a good board that deals with immigration issues.  I cant remember the name of it but there are some very knowledgable people there.  Maybe someone can help out with the name.

she doesnt have to be married for two years. she can be married for as little as two days, file an abuse case(without proof, or made up proof) with the INS and she is pretty much here for good. once she has filed an abuse case, her file goes to a diffrent INS office that handles such cases. it is a sad senario, but it happend quite a bit. sometimes the cases are real, amd a lot of times, they are bogus.

I didnt read your post until after I sent mine.  It doesnt have to be an abuse case to file before the two year time period.  If she can prove the marriage was in good faith AT THE TIME OF THE MARRIAGE she can apply immediately after the divorce.  Like you said in your scenario she is probably here for good if she claims abuse.

I don't know about on a fiancee visa, but coming in on a spousal visa they get a green card in about 6 weeks(my wife did).It is however temporary for 2 years. To make it permanent they either both,or her seperately need to file 90 days before the 2 year point. Its possible for her to get it even if he doesn't file with her if she can show abuse or "good intentions",whatever that means. My wife just got her permanent residency approved, they stamped something in her passport and she will get the new card in 3 months or so.
Some girls just want to get in the country and won't even wait for the green card.
I guess my friend thought he was doing the honorable thing and it wasn't really second hand imformation since he got it from the girls family.
I guess if it turns out true the guy might remember the warning. But yeah, its not likely to be a call recieved well."Excuse me,do you realize your being a total fool."

But it takes at least two years before the permanent green card is issued. First you have to apply to get the conditional status removed. If you do not apply for the conditiional status be removed within the first two years the deportation process will begin.

I dont know how long it takes to get the permanent green card but like Mudd said you can apply right away.  If you come in on a spousal visa you are probably going to be legal for 3 years if you divorce.  If you apply on your own you get an automatic one year extension.  3 years is a long time for circumstances to change... new gringo husband, claims of abuse, etc...Do you think the INS actually searches for these women and deports them?

No I don't think the INS goes out a looks for them. But after two years she will become illegal and I don't think the INS would grant her a permanent green card without first talking to her orginal husband to find out if the marriage was a fraud. Also, I think it is a lot of work for a women to keep looking for another gringo to marry very two years.
