Why do you think alot of families are minus the husband? The Colombian men are especially vulnerable to this technique as their machismo mentality often gives them a false sense of security. And of course, the counter (IV) is not readily available down there. UNICEF is looking into IV airlifts to the more dangerous areas of Colombia.
Be careful, there are other derivatives of this technique that may have already spread to neighboring Venezuela and Brazil.
