Hi Guys:

I ran across this article today, and it touched me with the sincerity and balance delivered by the writer.

Please no-one use this as a foil for mass condemnation of the Muslim faith or the Arab communities. One of my greatest friends is an Kuwaiti and a devout Muslim and I think the world of him and his family.

Still, I thought you might find it interesting. Here it is:

SHAME ON YOU AMERICAN-HATING LIBERALS

Thursday 21 November 2002

Tony Parsons

ONE year ago, the world witnessed a unique kind of broadcasting - the mass murder of thousands, live on television.

As a lesson in the pitiless cruelty of the human race, September 11 was up there with Pol Pot's mountain of skulls in Cambodia, or the skeletal bodies stacked like garbage in the Nazi concentration camps.

An unspeakable act so cruel, so calculated and so utterly merciless that surely the world could agree on one thing - nobody deserves this fate.

Surely there could be consensus: the victims were truly innocent, the perpetrators truly evil.

But to the world's eternal shame, 9/11 is increasingly seen as America's comeuppance.

Incredibly, anti-Americanism has increased over the last year.

There has always been a simmering resentment to the USA in this country - too loud, too rich, too full of themselves and so much happier than Europeans - but it has become an epidemic.

And it seems incredible to me. More than that, it turns my stomach.

America is this country's [United Kingdom] greatest friend and our staunchest ally. We are bonded to the US by culture, language and blood.

A little over half a century ago, around half a million Americans died for our freedoms, as well as their own. Have we forgotten so soon?

And exactly a year ago, thousands of ordinary men, women and children - not just Americans, but from dozens of countries - were butchered by a small group of religious fanatics. Are we so quick to betray them?

What touched the heart about those who died in the twin towers and on the planes was that we recognised them. Young fathers and mothers, somebody's son and somebody's daughter, husbands and wives. And
children. Some unborn.

And these people brought it on themselves? And their nation is to blame for their meticulously planned slaughter?

These days you don't have to be some dust-encrusted nut job in Kabul or Karachi or Finsbury Park to see America as the Great Satan.

The anti-American alliance is made up of self-loathing liberals who blame the Americans for every ill in the Third World, and conservatives suffering from power-envy, bitter that the world's only superpower can
do what it likes without having to ask permission.

The truth is that America has behaved with enormous restraint since September 11.

Remember, remember.

Remember the gut-wrenching tapes of weeping men phoning their wives to say, "I love you," before they were burned alive. Remember those people leaping to their deaths from the top of burning skyscrapers.

Remember the hundreds of firemen buried alive. Remember the smiling face of that beautiful little girl who was on one of the planes with her mum. Remember, remember - and realise that America has never
retaliated for 9/11 in anything like the way it could have.

So a few al-Qaeda tourists got locked without a trial in Camp X-ray? Pass the Kleenex.

So some Afghan wedding receptions were shot up after they merrily fired their semi-automatics in a sky full of American planes? A shame, but maybe next time they should stick to confetti.

AMERICA could have turned a large chunk of the world into a parking lot. That it didn't is a sign of strength.

American voices are already being raised against attacking Iraq - that's what a democracy is for. How many in the Islamic world will have a minute's silence for the slaughtered innocents of 9/11? How many Islamic leaders will have the guts to say that the mass murder of 9/11 was an abomination?

When the news of 9/11 broke on the West Bank, those freedom-loving Palestinians were dancing in the street. America watched all of that - and didn't push the button. We should thank the stars that America
is the most powerful nation in the world. I still find it incredible that 9/11 did not provoke all-out war. Not a "war on terrorism". A real war.

The fundamentalist dudes are talking about "opening the gates of hell", if America attacks Iraq. Well, America could have opened the gates of hell like you wouldn't believe.

The US is the most militarily powerful nation that ever strode the face of the earth.

The campaign in Afghanistan may have been less than perfect and the planned war on Iraq may be misconceived.

But don't blame America for not bringing peace and light to these wretched countries. How many democracies are there in the Middle East, or in the Muslim world? You can count them on the fingers of one hand - assuming you haven't had any chopped off for minor shoplifting.

I love America, yet America is hated. I guess that makes me Bush's poodle. But I would rather be a dog in New York City than a Prince in Riyadh. Above all, America is hated because it is what every country
wants to be - rich, free, strong, open, optimistic.

Not ground down by the past, or religion, or some caste system. America is the best friend this country ever had and we should start remembering that.

Or do you really think the USA is the root of all evil? Tell it to the loved ones of the men and women who leaped to their death from the burning towers.

Tell it to the nursing mothers whose husbands died on one of the hijacked planes, or were ripped apart in a collapsing skyscraper.

And tell it to the hundreds of young widows whose husbands worked for the New York Fire Department. To our shame, George Bush gets a worse press than Saddam Hussein.

Once we were told that Saddam gassed the Kurds, tortured his own people and set up rape-camps in Kuwait. Now we are told he likes Quality Street. Save me the orange centre, oh mighty one!

Remember, remember, September 11. One of the greatest atrocities in human history was committed against America.

No, do more than remember. Never forget.

....Nice to know some of those blokes are on our side. As in most cases, I think the wrath is more aimed at the government than us as a people. Can't blame them much, the people we elect are a strange bunch. For example, up until a few days ago crew had to pass the same security screening as everyone else. Had to remove caps and shoes, give up nail clippers, scissors, etc. (I could tell you some great stories about this nonsense.)

A pilot at US Air was even arrested for pointing this stupidity out to a screener, delaying the flight and inconvinencing hundreds. Now, overnight, we go from that to carrying guns. Does that make sense?
lol...the gum'mint at it's finest.

Btw, there has been some interesting reports circulating in the industry about odd things that have happened during recent flights. People have been doing such strange things as rushing the forward cabin for no reason, casually trying to unlock the "door of doom" (as it's jokingly called), making drawings of it, even changing into fatigues in the rear lavs.

This has happened several times on different flights in what is believed to be an attempt to provoke the FAMs or other LEOs on board into taking action and identifying themselves. So far, nothing has come of it. Powerful queer stuff, or it may simply be internal politics.

Still, let's all be careful out there.

...Yoey. I've read this guy Floyd before, he's definatley got a hair across his azz. Reminds me of the disallusioned  Americans who went to Russia in the 50's and 60's. Of course, his description also applies to Russia.

I'll say one thing though: If average Americans really studied the recently passed Security bill they shouldn't be sleeping well. Osama has won in ways he couldn't even have imagined. And the current AG has been a real threat to this nation's liberties, even before 9-11 occured.

...for entertainment, the mill at PPRUNE can be a riot at times. But there are lots of internal politics in the industry and the once proud profession of 25 years ago is in a sad state of affairs today because of it. The reports were recently sent to Congress by the head the APSA, I suspect to support the plan to carry bullet launchers onboard. As I said, likely politics. If you care to read this it's now online at Avweb:
http://www.avweb.com/other/apsasmith0247a.pdf

Rumor or not, it's ludicrous to be searched one day and armed the next. (Btw, every industry rag I pick up lately is starting to look like an issue of Guns & Ammo. lol...be afraid, be very afraid.) Fwiw, I've had no one I know confirm any of these incidences. The FAMs I've spoken to say they can't talk about such things, whatever that means.

I'm familiar with the incident mentioned in the other post, there was a history of mental problems and drug use with that pax. Best these days to just sit quietly and be aware of your surroundings (a good practice in everyday life anyway). Please don't drink yourself into a stupor as many do, it just makes life difficult for everyone. ;-)

It's all a test of our security.  Like the Arizona State University student that jiggled the door to the cockpit and asked strange questions, the shaving rituals in the bathrooms (as Muslims do before suicide attacks) and trying to open the back door for some fresh air.  Then of course they sued for racial profiling.  The dumbest idea I've heard is that we need to hire more middle eastern pilots to meet diversity hiring goals.  This is why I rarely fly now.

A couple of years ago on a plane from Phoenix a guy with mental problems ruished the cockpit and the passengers restrained him.  He did it again and they beat him to death.  The parents tried to sue the airline but the passengers killed him and I think the airline won that one.  Can passengers beat the cr@p out of nutcases and claim we were just being good citizens?

...Didn't you know that being involved in MOB negates your "good citizen" status no matter what you do? ;-)

Seriously, the law is the same whether you're in an airplane or a bar. Just remember it doesn't give you the same protection as the crew, they can do anything they see fit in such a situation. You also open yourself up to civil litigation and that's a trying experience, even if you prevail.

If you feel like you need to take action then do it, don't wait for the crew to ask. (And belive me, they will) They can't leave the pointy end for any reason now, the Door Of Doom must remain closed no matter whats happening in back. And don't depend on a FAM being around, only about 10% (if that) of flights have them.

If it were me, I'd do what I have to save my butt and worry about the consequences later. The folks on UA 93 knew that and did what they had to. Ordinary people in extrodinary circumstances, they sacrificed their lives to save others.  Seems to me there are worse ways to die.
