Barry, the gold band is exactly what I plan to do. Marriage is a state of mind, and no big, real diamond will make a difference no matter what de Beers tries to get you to believe.

Pete and Barry raise an important point - what type of ring should you get.  I agree that the Russian custom is to exchange gold rings - not a big expense when compared to a diamond - and I believe most RW will be very happy with that.  On the other hand, the look and reaction on my wife's face when she saw her engagement ring for the first time was, as they say in the Mastercard commercial, Priceless.  Either way is acceptable in my view, but the simulated diamond route is a cheap way out, and will likely be perceived as such.

That's why I suggested to upgrade when tying the knot. An engagement is usually going to be agreed upon in Ukraine or Russia, hence sticking with custom for there. Over here, we are more used to a more elaborate wedding ring with precious stones. Since the wedding is most likely going to take place here, why not have both customs to bridge the gap?

Engagement rings are NOT a part of FSU customs. Check it out the next time you are there. Rarely will you see a "bridal ring set". The "traditional" wedding ring is a band, plain or set with stones.

I know you ment well, but you're asking for trouble if not now then later. It's best to just stick with their expectations of a gold band. Hey go a little crazy and get one with a few small real diamonds in the band.

If you're giving a girl in Russia a ring and if it is to mark your turf so to speak, they wear their wedding ring on their right hand.
