You could probably live well on that.If you rent some rooms like I will you could possibly even have a luxury condo basically  free. There is ahuge difference bewtween short term gringo and hotel rates vs what locals pay.
My apartment will be about $800 a month everything ,but its luxury 4 bedrooms plus den,5 baths. You can rent a nice one bedroom apt for about 300,000 pesos I think, only $110 or so..My ex in laws pay 350,000 pesos for a 4 bedroom 3 bath house in an OK neighborhood.Thats about $130 a month.
I think they have a 3 bedroom 2 bath townhouse they rent for about $60 a month when they can get paid the rent.I wouldn't recommend that neighborhood for a gringo.
Food can be cheap if you cook or eat at cheap places.Taxis are cheap but the bus is cheaper. There are whole families in Cali living on $200 a month,or less.
But if you want to have fun and chase chicas you can spend alot on food and intertainment.

I would think that Peru and Colombia are similar as far as costs go (?)

In PERU

I think that if I had a place paid for $40,000 and a car $5000 that I could live easy (with a wife) for $500 a month. I think with more than that you could have a house keeper-cook full time.

I think with $1000 you could rent a place and still have everything you want.

Remember when you are working all the time you are willing to pay for convenience. If you dont work then you can look for deals and make home cooked meals etc.

Just my ideas anyway

TE AMO PERU!

My wife's parents have a real nice paid for house and their living expense run about $300 a month.  I enjoy staying at their house, it isn't a bad life.

[This message has been edited by DavidMN]

Cali Vet posted an approximate budget a long time ago and I think it was ~$550 USD without food, entertainment or travel.

If you can live pretty well on $1000/month, then everyone who's got a minimum of $90,000 equity in their home after the real estate boom can cash out, invest it in long term Colombian govt bonds paying 14% and live happily ever after on the interest (taxes not considered)!  ;-)

DavidMN yes that's still true. With that 1k figure I'm throwing in every frivolty I can think of. There's just nothing more I can spend money on except maybe more expensive trips. Of course one round trip to the states for two would blow that figure out of the water.

Taxes for sure but the real killer would be inflation!  There's a reason the bonds are paying 14%.

Yep, that's where it gets complicated. If someone considers living there long term and doesn't have an indexed pension of some sort, you've got to make some inflation and foreign exchange assumptions that could really hurt if you're wrong...

Hi - I haven't done anything very detailed. Some people will say that residential property has been a good investment but I don't know where to find real estate benchmarks of some sort like we have in the U.S. Even if it's doubled in the last few years, it's a good idea to keep in mind the following chart...

http://finance.yahoo.com/m5?s=USD&t=COP&a=1&c=3

...If you've got a fairly short time horizon or need to sell unexpectedly, the big gains might translate into breakeven or a loss after converting back to USD.
