Hey Guys! I am planning a trip to Cali the first week in November. Please give me some moral support and tips on staying safe in Cali. Also, is it safe to go out of the city at all?

... in response to Safety in Cali, posted by Billt on Oct 17, 2001

Hi Billt,

I have been to Cali several times. I have never had any problems.  In general the locals are friendly, particularly the chicas! But do not assume it is safe by any means, it is not.

I have some general rules that I always follow:

1) Have someone you know either a lady or an agency person pick you up in a taxi at the airport.  Avoid taking that long cab ride from the airport into town with just any taxi if you can. If you have to take one from the airport,  pick one of the guys right out front with the yellow cars with all the typical taxi phone numbers and stuff, and the driver usually has an ID badge around his neck. Make sure you have the address and phone number of your destination with you, so if the cabbie doesn’t recognize the address he can call and get directions.

2) After dark, always have the agency or the hotel or the restaurant call you a radio taxi, don't just pick one up from the street, particularly late at night (this applies to most cities in SA).  Wait for the taxi to arrive to step outside, don’t wait on the street.  If someone assists you in getting a taxi, give them a small tip.  Carry an assortment of small bills and coins, the taxis sometimes don’t have change.

3) Carry a "sacrificial wallet” with you. You have only the money you need for the day, a credit card you don’t mind losing too much, and a copy of your passport.  If you get pinched, hand it over with a smile and go call your credit card company.  Take two credits cards or an ATM with you but don’t carry them in your wallet together.  Keep them separate so you don’t lose both at the same time. Guard your passport carefully, they are worth big bucks in Colombia now.  Plus it is a major pain in the butt to have to go to Bogota to get it re-issued. I sometimes carry a hidden money belt down my pants or strapped to my leg with extra money, my real passport, and my spare credit card or ATM card.  Most of the hotels have a lock box, use it if looks secure.  You will need your passport to use your credit card or cash travelers checks.

4) Wear casual clothes and keep a low profile. Most gringos standout like a sore thumb anyway but avoid flashy clothes.  Don’t ever wear shorts out in public, wear long pants, yes I know it is hot!.  Avoid wearing the baseball type cap because it really says “gringo”.

5) Take a taxi everywhere, avoid walking around town and never after dark.  Taxis are dirt cheap anyway.

6)  I would not travel outside the city limits (except to the airport), remember the bad guys are very close to Cali on all sides.  If you have to go to Bogota, fly and don’t take the bus. One chica asked me to take a bus with her to Buga to visit her sister, I said no.

7) The two big malls Unicentro and Chipichapi are musts to visit.  Lots of stuff to do, plus there are ATMs and Internet cafes, and there are lots of chicas to see.  The zoo is not too bad.  Remember you are not there to site see,  you are there to meet Miss Right.  Stick with the malls, restaurants, and discos.

Cool Expect to be searched from time to time (like going to the movies or into a disco) so don’t carry any weapons or anything like that.

9) Americans are generally well liked in Cali, I would rather go to Cali than Lima any day.

These guide lines are not that hard to follow. Remember lots of gringos go to Cali without any problem.  I had a great time each and every time I went.

In my opinion the women are far more “dangerous” than the bad guys, one might steal your heart.

Take care and have a great time,
mike

I do...in BQ and Cartagena, with sandals...yeah, yeah yeah, I know, you're supposed to were pants. I have even worn tie-dyes down there, never a problem...But I will sacrifice whatever safety wearing pants brings for a little comfort in the oppressive heat in the coastal cities. I do at night when we go out, but that's it.  I'm 6'3, blue eyes and light brown hair...I stick out as a gringo even if I was wearing a mariachi suit. The main threat that I have found is petty street theft, but was never a victom. Just walk down streets that have people on it, look behind you every ten seconds or so to make sure some young punks are'nt following you...another key is to let the lady take you around, they can spot trouble a mile away.  If you see some tough looking guys, just lazily mozy over to the other side of the street, holding hands with your babe.

and most importantly, follow Vince Lombardi's quote:  "Act like you have been in the end-zone before".

No sweat....Mike

The answer to that is only on sunday. On sunday the people bike and walk on streets that are closed for that purpose. The parks are filled with amature socker players so you will see people in restaurants and shops wearing shorts, but seldom women. Personal presentation is important in Colombia and indicates class. Americans dress down Colombians dress up.  The whole idea is not to stand out. Most people do not wear shorts to work here, unless they live in Key west like me.jim c

Hmmmm,

I wore shorts occasionally, they were long and loose fitting. Stay away from the Magic Johnson/Larry Bird era shorts...lol! You'll really draw attention with those, lmao. I've seen many males (young & old) w/caps....
I wore my "Yankee" cap with pride. Gave a few to my primos, who where their's everyday...lol

Peace...Hoda

"El centro" or the downtown comercial area is not very safe although the hotel Aristi is located there and is popular with foreigners. Many areas like the park and bridge in front of the Jorge Isaaks theater are perfectly safe during the day because they are heavily populated. At night they empty out and become dangerous. Always avoid any unpopulated areas at night. If you're out and about at night you'll probobly be with a girl, at least it's more fun that way. Listen to her and she will steer you both clear of dangerous areas. If your hotel or agency is definately secure leave your credit cards there. Just carry money and a copy of your passport in your wallet. As it's your first trip to Cali there's probobly no need to go beyond the city. If you do travel you should consider all areas south of the city such as Jamundi off limits also anywhere in the nearby mountains to the west known as Los Fallarones de Cali. Unfortunately the popular weekend restaurant area at kilometro 18 on the road to Buenaventura along the north side of this area was the target of a guerilla kidnapping this past year. Also the popular Lago Calima is not recommended now. I personally am comfortable traveling by bus west to Palmira but NOT south of there to Florida. Also the route north of Cali through Buga, Tulua, Pereira and on up to Manizales has been free of guerillas. I have gone as far as Trujillo and Roldanillo on this route recently. There are cells of AUC or Autodefensas in some of these areas but they haven't bothered foreign travelers up to now. Their main interest is in the guerilla and suspected sympathisers. When I travel by bus I make sure to dress down but that probobly goes with out saying. Let me make it very clear that I'm not recomending such travel. Each has his own level of risk tolerence.
