If the girl was to get any other visa besides a K-1, she could marry who she wanted and be allowed to stay in the country. The K-1 is the only visa that restricts the marriage of an immigrant to a specific individual. I met a guy at Jack's BBQ earlier this year and he had the same situation. His wife had to return to Ukraine and go through the I-130 immigration process. The K-1 is probably the most restrictive visa perhaps for a good reason.

So she only has to return to Ukraine and start the I-130?

It's interesting for me when you state;

This is very far from the situation here in Britain. Do many foriegners marry US citizens while visiting on non K-1 visas? Does the marriage ALWAYS give them the right to stay in the US?

In the first place...K-1 visas are NOT "granted US CITIZENSHIP" after 90 days. What a mess.

US law allows for a change of status to their non-K-1 visa when foriegner marries a US citizen in the USA. It usually requires an attorney to do the paperwork but it's not too complicated. A friend of mine married an RW from Vladivostok who was here on a medical visa. Immigration laws are pretty lax in the US. All an immigrant needs to do is find a way to come here legally and then there are many avenues to obtaining permanent residency. All they need to do is hire an attorney for the most part. The K-1 is the exception to this.

Interesting. WOnder what happened to the first guy, huh?

Although why she is being deported is not secret: She came over on a specific fiance Visa... it wasn't a license to marry any American for 90 days...

Seems to me that instead of complaining, they should have filed a K-3 right away...
