DVDs with Russian Subtitles?

I think this was posted once, but I forgot to book mark it.

Is there a source where I can get DVDs that are subtitled in Russian? (Not weird Art films, I mean mainstream Hollywood Fare...)

I have only located one place, and they only have 8 movies available with Russian subtitles:

And the collection of movies they have are REALLY strange:

The Net
Sense and Sensibility

Sleepless in Seattle
Legends of the Fall
The Swan Princess

Trying to make some snese out of why THOSE eight would take a mind like John Nash's...

Anywhere else have these?

Many of the bootleg CD stands in Odessa and Kiev have something that will help. They do not have subtitles, but the english talk is turned low, and they have voice actors translating the movie on the fly. I saw a few videos (all in MPEG format) like this. They cost about $4, and you can get any number of mainstream videos. It will not help you learn to read Russian, but it will help build up your vocabulary. You are able to hear both the English and Russian speak at the same time.

If you are interested I can pick some up for you on my next trip (October or November) and ship them to you once I get back to the states.

I have not looked at the non-bootleg DVD's. I am sure they have english subtitles, nowever they may not be able to be played on your north american DVD player. Also non-bootleg DVDs cost around $20-$40 each.

The problem with DVDs over there is that they have a different regional codeing, and won't play in a DVD player from the US...

My last paragraph mentioned the regional thing. The movies you purchase on the street are not DVD. They are MPEG copied over to a CD. These will not play on a DVD player, but will play on any good computer, or laptop cd drive. Some movies take two CD (like resident evil), but most take one. These CD are ported from a DVD into MPEG format.

They have the same quality and work well. They have helped me learn russian vocabulary since russian is spoken over the original english.

Can't help you but I have an even trickier question. Is there anywhere that I could buy Russian films subtitled or dubbed into English? There's a few films I saw that I'd like to share with people here but my translating skills are to poor.

I just bought 3 videos from them. One thing you should know, the VHS quality is not as good since they're being dubbed from SECAM or PAL. DVD's may be better but there is not as good a selection from Russia just yet. Wait another year or so and there will be Russian DVD movies out the wazoo.
