We have a security reason for hurting ourselves economically by instituting these controls.  Their only reason is spite.  I think it's funny.  Let them drain a little more off of their limping economy.  I remember in the 60s people said Brazil was on the verge of becoming a first world economy.  They aren't even on the verge anymore.  I think we know why.

The article in your post says nothing about a 9 hour wait.  And the following article mentions a 45 minute wait.

The last paragraph of the article he posted reads:

When the checks were first introduced, some incoming US flight passengers were delayed at the airport for up to nine hours while security officials ran identification checks.

Here's the link again:

Thanks for pointing that out.  At least according to the article I cited they have gotten it down to 45 minutes.  It takes me at least that long to get through Bogota.

Yeah, the article states that:

"When the checks were first introduced, some incoming US flight passengers were delayed at the airport for up to nine hours while security officials ran identification checks."

Key words are "first introduced" and "some incoming US passengers"  I am not sure that it is still taking this long or if it affected every US passenger coming in.  It could be your typical media sensationalism.  But I have haven't been down there in a couple of months so I don't know.  I will admit that a 9 hour wait at the airport would begin to chip away even my goodwill towards men.....

That would be huge,no one wants to do the. That will kill their tourism. But then when you take a new proceedure and apply it with typical latin efficiency you could take a 15 miniute process and turn it in to 9 hours.
I don't blame them for being pissed at us and trying to get back at us.But if its a 9 hour wait they are really shooting themselves in the a-s.Might be a good time to buy a hotel. When their occupancty rate hits 10% they could be cheap. And how about all the people working in the tourist industry that will be hurt?If they can't get that 9 hours down to something reasonable they will be forced to drop the whole deal.I will just cost them too much.Something will have to change here or it could take Lulu down sooner than might have otherwised happened.
