Okay, I searched the archives and I still don't understand what a "certificate of singlehood" is and more importantly how to get one.  According to the document checklist that Nelson gave me, I should be able to get one from the office of vital statistics in the county I was born (why they would know if I am single in the first place is beyond me since I never lived in the county and haven't lived within 2000 miles of it in 30 years).  I checked with the Department of Vital statistics for the state and they don't know what I am talking about.  Can one of you guys that have had to get one explain this to me please?

quick question, how long have you two been dating?? it seems very soon to already be filing for a spousal visa. Its your life, but as i remember, you too havent been dating very long, and i feel that you will be like ken2 and other guys who get burned by getting married in colombia, instead of using the K1 visa. remember, once you are married, and if you too dont work out, the financial statement from the K1 to the spousal visa is very diffrent. Ken2 is going to find out the hard way what it will cost him, since he is financialy responsible for her. Even if they get divorced, and he finds another girl from another country, he will have to put his EX wife down as a financial dependant.

Two letters signed by two friends or family members, in the presence of a notary, stating they have known you for ten years and that you are not married.  After being notarized they need to be sent to the secretary of state in the state the document was issued for an apostille.

Here is the link to a website with some good info.  Also you can find the addresses here to send your documents for obtaining the Apostille.  The link is from the Gala Bala website.

I paid a colombian lawyer $200 extra and I didn't need a certificate of singlehood or a marriage visa to get married in Cali.

I have heard that was possible.I probably spent $700 or so getting documents translated and paying Colombian counsolate fees to get a visa to marry my wife, and that is only to get the marriage certificate which you can get without it for some $,in this case less$,plus less haasle.
The Colombian counsolate had my passport to stamp a visa in it.I got it back the morning I was leaving.Of course I could not leave without it.
As long as you know for sure you can get someone to do that I would go that route.

Hey Calipro, how long ago did you use this lawer?  I would be very interested in using the same one.  I found one lawer who would forget the marriage visa for a 1000 bucks. I would get the visa before I would pay a grand, but I would gladly pay two hundred to skip the hassle.

The lawyers name is Deyanira Llanos. Her address is: Avenida 4B Norte # 37A 40 La Flora Cali, Colombia
Phone: 665 0881
Email is abogadad@hotmail.com You can write her in english.

I got married in her house on Aug. 16th. I don't know what she is charging to marry someone now. But, when I got married the difference in the price of having only a tourist visa and having a marriage visa was $200 dollars.
I paid the exta $200 and got married on a tourist visa.

You had to have a spousal visa to take your wife back to the states didn't you?  What documents were required of you to get the spousal visa?

I'll be taking my wife to the embassy in December so she can get her spousal visa. When I got married in Colombia the only thing I had to have was my birth certificate and my divorce decrees plus the cash for the lawyer.

If you are interested you can contact the lawyer by e-mail at abogadad@hotmail.com. She can tell you all the documents that you will need depending on your situation. If you decide to get married on a tourist visa you won't need to bother with the certificate of singlehood.

When you get married, the marriage is recorded at the Dept of Vital Statistics. If the Dept of Vital Statistics has no record that you were married, they can state that in a letter after a search of their archives. That is the "certificate of singlehood" (In Canada they called it a "letter of no marriage"). That is what they want in Colombia.

What I did is supply an official record of my divorce, and a letter from Vital Statistics that no record of marriage was found since my divorce. These had to be translated (by an official translator the gov. of Colombia will recognize), notarized here, and in Colombia. Hope this helps.............Canadian.

Is this the the Dept of Vital Statistics where I live, or where I was born or where I was divorced?  I can't find any reference to "certificate of singlehood" or "letter of no marriage" on the Department of Vital Statistics webpages for any of these places.  Where am I supposed to go?

Go to your County Clerk-Recorders office.  They can do a search of your name in their recorded marriages database to see if any marriages have been registered.  If none are found, they can write a letter indicating so.

You eventually have to convince a notary down there that you are legally allowed to marry. Talk to the notary and see what he will accept as proof. Good Luck...........Canadian.

It's a document that you make up yourself attesting to you being single that must be signed by two(2) people who know you and can swear that you are not married. It's used by the Colombian goverment when you attempt to get married in Colombia
