A lawyer here told me that in order to marry the notery requires a copy of your birth certificate issued within three months of the marriage. Anyone else run in to that?

I went down to the travel agency at Confenalco to ask where I can take my novia without her needing a visa. The agent told me that as far as Caribbean destinations and points north the options are Panama, Cuba, Curacao and Aruba. Two that require easy to get visas are the Dominican Republic and Isla Margarita off Venezuela. However the DR requires a package type hotel voucher. You (a Colombian) can't just get round trip air and travel around picking hotels as you go. I was surprised to to see that Cuba packages started at a thousand US per person from Cali! A Royal Decameron beach resort has newly opened in Panama and is offering seven nights at US$539 per person again from Cali. Small print on the brochure says only one kilometer from beautifull white beaches. Tours offered include shopping tours to Panama City. Does that sound fun or what?! Points south include all of South America she said.

I ran into the same problem about four months ago when I was interested in marrying in Cali. Since my b.c was issued in Germany it would have required that I return to Germany and obtain a b.c and exchange my original. I opted for the k-1 route instead.

I had to go thru the same thing. Only our notary requested that the certificate be translated to spanish, with it being notarized and apostilled. You can have someone in the states handle that for ya. Good luck & thanks for the list of places & requirements for entry, for a Colombian...

LOL...Yeah, you're talking doc's, you'll be jumping over the broomstick soon....

I had to get one. In Canada you can get a wallet sized card or a full sized page. The larger one is an official transcript of the original Registration of Birth. That is the one they want in Colombia.

Vet,

I, or rather my novia in her phone calls to the
various Notaries, encountered the same problem
of newly-issuedbirth certificates. That is one
reason we have decided to cast our lots with
the Catholic Church.

She also got us a honeymoon package at St. Andres,
which is Colombian and therefore does not present visa
problems. They have air fare-food-drink-lodging packages
that are very cheap. These do not include scuba.

Check out www.san-andres.com

good luck,

Thanks Celt,

My impression is that the notery requirements are separate from the church's but I need to check further. It's inconvenient but I can get a newly issued certificate and have it sent down. Thanks for the tip on San Andres. We went to the sister island Isla Providencia for a week earlier this year and I came away with the impression that it's an unparalleled Caribbean paradise unless you want mechanized watersports and the company of lots of other tourists in which case San Andres would be the better choise.

Vet,

Facing Xmas/NewYears/MarriageSeason rushes, we grabbed
what was left. I was just amazed at how inexpensive it
was, considering the three rushes.

We decided the novio visa requirements at the
Colombian consulates in the U.S. were more time-
demanding than the Catholic requirements, which
I can fulfill in a weekend's time.

The Cali diocese tried to present us with an absurd
list of requirements. I called up a Mons. in my city,
who happens to be a Church Lawyer. He told me to
present his e-mail to the Cali diocese. Overnight,
the list of demands---errrh! requirements---went
way down.

We intend to present the Church dox to the Notary,
and then scoot off to the honeymoon. On the way
back, she will present the whole package to the
embassy in Bogota.

That's interesting, I guess it can't hurt to have a church lawyer. Don't you have to take the church matrimony course too? We have to attend for a week in December.

She is taking it with her Catholic Church in Cali.
I am taking it through the Anglican Church in the
States. Mine will be shorter and much more low-key.
