1) Gringo tax is $ 38.00 US or 75,000 pesos payable at the AA counter when you check in. You may pay in either form of currency.

2) Airport Hotel is ok if you do not have a hotel in town or are staying with someone you know.

1. 8pm would be fine, and Friday or Saterday night you     could probobly make that 10pm.

2. Yes you have to pay a departure tax, don't remember how much. Pay in dollars or pesos. Other than the tax there aren't any other expenses unless you have your bags wrapped in plastic or want breakfast at one of the little restaurants down by national flights end.

I mentioned this a long time ago but it might be worth repeating. When I leave Cali I always go out to the airport the evening before and stay at the airport hotel up on the top floor. A single is about $25 or less and has air, tv, stocked fridge etc. but cold shower. That way instead of taxying out before dawn to catch the seven something flight to Miami I can just shower and walk downstairs to the AA counter. You can make up some of that $25 by taking the minibus out to the airport the afternoon before. They leave every 15 minutes from the Cali bus terminal and cost $2.200, second floor right above where all the taxis line up. From the top of the stairs just head straight ahead towards the guy yelling "Aeropuerto! aeropuerto!" The last one leaves Cali at 6pm. Best to get to the terminal about 5:30 to get the seat you want. It can get real crouded. The terminal is a $2.000 cab ride from most points in north Cali. It's five to ten minutes by taxi from Chipichapi. Same is true for arrival. If your flight arrives before about 8:45pm and you're not packing ten suitcases and don't want to pay the "gringo" taxi fare you can catch the last minibus that leaves for Cali at 9pm then taxi to your destination from the terminal.

The airport hotel sounds like a good suggestion.  The Cali airport seems like it's way out in the country away from the city.  The road to the airport is very dark at 4 AM and there are not many road signs.  I had no idea if the taxi driver was going to airport or some friend's house to rob me.  Furthermore, if you read about the highway kidnappings you'll be terrified on that ride to the airport.  I would've been, but my fiancee insisted on accompanying me both times.  The first time I almost told her "No".  After I got on the highway in that taxi I was glad she was there.  She knew we were on the right road.
