Porrua out of Mexico is a good Spanish dictionaly, They are availble in paperback. I got one in Mexico City 30 years ago for about $4.00US, but I think they still make them....check the stores that cater to Mexicans where you live.

Omni Resources out of North Carolina have maps of most major cities worldwide (including Cali). You can phone, fax, or order online.

Check it out:

I'm not sure where you can get a good map of Cali in the States (not very likely) but you can find a detailed street map of Cali in the major bookstores when you are in Cali at either the Chipi Chapi (sp?) mall or the Unicentro mall.

I also used to use the "mapa", "Colombia", "Cali" link  at www.despegar.com  website and you could look up an address online for Cali and then print out the map, it wasn't perfect but it was helpful at times. Cali has a grid system that makes finding addresses fairly easily.

I tried it. I even registered. When I select the Mapas, Colombia, cali links I get a blank screen.
How do you get to the address look up section.

Thanks,

Alan

I bought a paperback Larousse Jr. Edition all Spanish dictionary in Tijuana for $10.  This is a good way to go for an English speaker because the Jr. edition is written for a high school Spanish-speaking audience so the dictionary entries have clear definitions and lots of examples.  An entry usually has enough information that I can guess what the English equivalent word would be.  They were also selling the complete Larousse 2 book edition for about $30.  I haven’t searched but Larousse might be on the Internet.  Another place to look in the States would be at a community college bookstore that teaches Spanish classes.

EC, if you're going to TJ, get Clave. Get both if you want, but if they have Clave don't pass it up.

There are bookstores in the Centro Comercial Shopping Center in Zona Rio.  I would recommend taking a cab.  I don't know how to drive there.

It's very hard to beat Clave: Diccionario de uso del español, but getting ahold of a copy in the States seems to be a bit difficult. I wrote a review of it on Amazon since it's listed there (but special order only) :-(

I bought the CD-ROM in Spain and the paperback in Brazil, and paid €30 for each. WELL worth it.

There is another very useful new dictionary from Editorial Aguilar, edited chiefly by Manuel Seco of the DRAE; but it is two large volumes and you could anchor a medium-sized yacht with it. For portability Clave is better, but Manuel Seco is readily available on Amazon for about $125. I saw it at a bookstore here in Buenos Aires last night for $16 (¡¡¡ !!!). If you can wait and buy in Cali, maybe you'll find a good deal there as well.

The María Moliner dictionary is very thorough but costs $295 on Amazon. I bought the first version of the CD-ROM in Spain for €60, and the second, better-formatted CD-ROM version has just been released by www.editorialgredos.com (€95). They told me they can ship overseas.

I deliberately passed on the DRAE because the above dictionaries are better and more flexible. The 22nd Edition CD-ROM has weekly online updates including americanismos, so you could consider that one too. But actually there is a site where you can consult it for free, which I can look up for you when I get home.

Thank you for your reply. If you can remember to look up the web site that has the dictionary online when you retrurn from your travels I would be most grateful.
