I have seen quite a lot of info giving the approximate time you can expect it to take to issue a K1 visa, but what if the girl doesn't have a passport either?  Does it affect the time it takes to get a K1 and can she apply for a passport at the same time she applys for the K1?

She must apply for a passport now, or as soon as possible in Colombia. As long as the passport is valid by the time she goes for the interview she will be OK. The only restriction is the passport must have a least 6 months left (valid for at least 6 more months) on it. This should be no problem if she is just getting it now. As far a the K-1 time it varies by where you live but in general I would say 3-6 months for the entire process ...meaning she steps off the plane in Miami.

A passport for a Colombian isn't issued by the United States government like the K1 Fiancee Visa but by the Colombian government itself.  She can get a passport within a few days but the K1 process from the time you send off your first packet to the time she receives her VISA is probably 3 to 6 months.

Like someone was telling you the other day, a K1 is to be used only for those people who are TRULY engaged and committed to marry.  You can read what the INS says about process on their website but I am certain that they frown on the use of the K1 as a sort of test drive and would consider it VISA fraud.
