Fellas,

I was wondering if it was bearable to stay in Cali w/out air conditioner in a room. Looks like many agencies (and probably hotels) dont have it. With temperature consistently hovering in high 80's and high humidity how is that possible? Also I see on the numerous pictures many men dressed in long sleeves and even full suites. It is gotta be sweltering hot out there. I have never been to Cali so bear with me.

My recent visit to Cali was by far the hottest I have felt, especially at night.  One particular morning after tossing and turning I awoke to hear the locals talking about the heat the night before.  I even saw wildfires close to Cristo Rey and las Tres Cruces.  I saw the devastation first hand.  After the flames were extinguished I climbed las Tres Cruces and saw the acres and acres that were burned.  The night before I got married, my sister and I stayed at a cheap hotel en el Centro with window unit air conditioners that rattled and made the most awful noises...we slept like babies

I've never stayed in a place in Cali that had air conditioning but I haven't missed it as long as I had a fan. Calipro is right about the hottest part of the day but I've actually been chilly a few evenings sitting out on Ave. Sexta. I almost never see ceiling fans in Cali, don't know why they don't catch on unless it's the cost of the electric. They're everywhere in the Dominican Republic.

I never stayed in a hotel without air conditioning. But I stayed in my wife's house and it doesn't have air. I bought a fan for our room. It is the hottest from about 2pm to 5pm in the day so try and find some place cool to hang out. After the sun goes down or in the morning the heat isn't a problem.

My experience has been in December through February but to me the climate is ideal.I guess its a little hotter in the summer although they are only 4 degrees north of the equator. My in laws have neither heating or air conditioning and don't need it.Thats fortunate because electricity is very expensive there, particularly compared to their income. They recently installed a water heater that heats the water right at the shower head. They did this for me and also for my wifes friend who visited in July.It ran up the electric bill alot.It was $200,I'm not sure if that was one month or 2.They live on the second floor of a 2 unit house, one below.
The tempurature seems 80-85 during the day and maybe 75 in the evening, when you are more likely to see people in long sleve shirts. At night I just leave a window open untill it cools down enough.Fortunately no flying insects so they don't need screens also.I've never been too hot there.
My wifes mother is funny,if it cools down 5 or 10 degrees they think it is so cold. They are just not used to tempurature differences.
I guess it can get quite hot,but I have never seen it,so sweltering is not the rule.Cali is also fortunate to have an afternoon breeze. If not they would be buried in smog because the vehicles emit so much.Your eyes can burn sometimes but you really don't see it in the air because of the breeze.

I personally needed at least a fan at night, in Cali.  Look into a hotel called El Pinon.  It is right behind the Intercontinental.  Free breakfast, central to a lot of places, air cond., and good service for around $35 a night.  If you double with a friend, it is still $35 a night.  I can get the address if you need it.

Dress? I wore shorts/light clothes.  Most Colombians wear pants, shorts is rare.  But I dress in baggy clothes as I'm a Gen. Xer.

Be comfortable and good luck,

Ken
