I thought you knew a little something about Colombian culture until now. Forty and Fifty something year old colombianos won't marry a women over 25 as a rule so why should American men have to?

I saw a bumper sticker on a car in Cali that said "I traded en my 30 year old for two 15 year olds". Thats the mind set in Colombia. Love it or leave it.

The men there are 90% MACHO...that means they BOOST up their image by having many GF's on the side and a YOUNGER WIFE.
Seen that also in peru and DR. (and Venezuela as well)

Men there do NOT marry women with kids allready from another mmarriage.period.
Guys of 40 think it's normal to marry a 22 year old.

I don't own an agency.  My business www.lazonadvdplanet.com has nothing to do with tourism its for Colombians.  I could careless if Americans travel to Cali.  I only stated my opinion based on my experience with Colombia and its people.  I'm trying to give you some insight on the reality of Cali.

When I was in Cali in April my friend and I spent a lot of time at Chipichapi.  There are a lot of beautiful women at Chipichapi.  It's much more impressive than a day at the mall here in Dallas.

In fact, it appears to me that the most beautiful women are not in the marriage agencies.  I asked my friend why he thinks this is so.  He said "Most of the beautiful women don't want to leave Cali.  Why should they?  They have the good life here.  There have nice stores and restaurants and if you're beautiful the men pay for it all."

There may be some truth to that.

Lex

I find it difficult to put into words the diferences between Colombianas and American women but I think they are real and important.  In the younger, better educated Colombianas the differences are probably not as great.  But there are still many women there of a more traditional mindset.

What I am saying is that while I posted that the man may "pay for it all" in Colombia it is probably because the woman cannot afford it.  Here in the US most women can afford it.  As such, they don't depend on the man for it and they may not appreciate it as much.  In Colombia I think the women often do develop a "dependency" on their man.  If you nurture that and treat her will, that can be a good thing.  I think it can lead to a strong bond which is what I am looking for.

As I say it's difficult to put into words, and every woman is different, even in Colombia.  But for me they are generally more attractive, because I think here in the US the women have been taught to play down their femininity.  In Colombia they have been taught to accentuate their femininity, I think.

There's no doubt that the women there are looking for someone who can give them a better life (see my post below titled: "No nos digamos mentiras").  But again I think that can lead to the stronger bond that I am looking for, in the right woman.  Again, you must chose well.  I chose poorly the first time.

Lex, what you are saying isn't very far from the truth.

I don't know who started this nonsense about how every Colombian lady is looking -- and willing to do anything -- for a way out of the country. In fact, the 3 ladies I dated while in Cali wanted to remain there. They asked me if I was willing to live in Cali.  I said that I was looking forward to it - in about 2 years. I also met one very disappointed gringo -- his favorite girl did not want to come to the US! The last time I saw him he was looking for an apartment near the agency.

If you are going to Colombia with the idea of rescuing a damsel in distress, you are going to be very disappointed! Cali is a beautiful city -- and not every lady wants to leave it with the first gentleman they meet.

... in response to Exodus By Colombians -- Very Unlikely!, posted by CaliBound on Aug 29, 2002

As much as I hate to agree with Lex, many people are trying to get out of Colombia.  I see it with many of my Colombian friends and aquaintences and the desire crosses all social and economic classes.  In almost every family I know in Cali, at least one member is trying to come to the United States.  I have a friend, good middle class family and her sister payed to come into the United States illegally.  Her family is excited because she is pregnant now and they hope that by her having a child it will improve her chances of being able to become legal.  Another close amiga of my fiancee is paying for illegal documents to help her come to the United States also.  Her and her novia are well educated professionals and they want to come to the United States for economic reasons more than anything else.  I've been asked a bunch of times to write a letter of invitation for someone as they get ready for the Embassy Interview in Bogota. I've done it twice but in both cases, their tourist visa requests were turned down.  Some people figured out that getting into the U.S. was a long shot and so there was a time when people were headed for Spain.

From what I can tell ALL these people love their country very much but the economic situation is what it is and therefore they've had to make some tough decisions.  You are right, not everyone wants to leave Colombia but IMO there are significant numbers who do.

But so what.  What's wrong with improving your lot in life.  Isn't that what we do when we look South.....
