... in response to That's what the books say, posted by Patrick on Jul 5, 2002

My wife has a friend from Cali that teaches Spanish in San Jose and said my wife could easily get a job there because the Colombians have a reputation for speaking good Spanish.

I also heard this many times from my various teachers when I was taking Spanish classes.  I had many good teachers from all over South and Central America.  They all had a little different twist on some of the aspects of speaking Spanish.

I lived in Spain for a little less than two years, and the Colombianos I knew there spoke better Spanish than Spaniards, in terms of both accent and "educación". A lot of latinoamericanos experience culture shock when they arrive in Spain and find out not only how cold and unfriendly Spaniards are by comparison, but how vulgar they are with the language.

... in response to That's my experience, posted by Bueller on Jul 5, 2002

Bueller, I have two cousins living in Spain (alot of Colombians emigrated there, but the Spanish government took away the tourist visas of Colombians) anyway, one lives in the mainland and the other cousin lives in Canary islands ant they both say the same thing. Guess what I could not believe it when my father told me the Colombian government (started in Bogota) mimicks the French in terms of developing "linguistic laws" that preserve and limits unnecessary change in the language. Of cousre its voluntary but Colombians agree with it. I simply love the "Colombian accent" come out when women speak it. Like I said before its nice that Colombia is also known for its excellent Castillian other than being known as drugdealers, anyway thanks for your comments--Colman

I attended a church in Valencia whose pastor was from Medellín. His wife told me how when they decided to move to Spain, she thought, "Oh, good--Europe! The boys will have a great cultural experience there.". Not long after they arrived, she pulled all three of them aside and told them they were to watch their father's example and not use any words he wouldn't use. The youngest one is about nine years old now, really a sweet kid, but when I left three months ago his mom was having to get him back in the habit of saying "please" and "thank you", and complaining that he was picking up Spanish manners.

When I went to the Brazilian consulate in Barcelona to get my visa, I was walking behind a group of high school students outside the consulate near Las Ramblas. One kid started out a statement to his friends, loudly enough for anyone around to hear, with "Joder..." Moments later, a girl in the group responded to some friends *about 30 feet away* with "¡Coño! Blah blah blah..." Sure, teenagers anywhere use profanity, but in this case there was no shame, no attempt to keep the voice down, and they weren't even mad about anything. I mention this not because it was unusual, but because it was so typical.

Did I mention I love Brasileiras and have never regretted coming to Brasil?

Actualy he called you "cabron"....a "billy goat"......a "highly offensive term" (to use your phrase) for a man who's wife is unfaitlful. Has nothing to do with race, has everything to do with manhood/masculinity.

The actualy meaning is as follows:
1) When nanny goat is ready, she gladly takes on all comers.
2) Guess what/who (or how many) your wife is doing?
3) If you were man enough to give her what she needs, she wouldn't have to get other guys to satisfy her.

So yes, he insulted you, but not the way you think.

Not taking a side, just trying to provide an accurate translation.

Yes,

Mick, you are right. I made a mistake. However, I never use the term, and things have been getting so heated between us that I mistakening read CARBON.

Troublemaker Ted posts..All their posts are flames and attacks on other Posters especially on Zzzzzzz. I get email letters from other Posters blasting these two, other posters hope Patrick ban them. They offer nothing of value to the board for us newbies, offering only their negative outlook.

Aaron,
I guess they did not tell you how to use a dictionary at PSU. If you do not understand - Cabron, you need a lot more espan~ol before you buy a can of Goya buddy, let alone go to a LA country. Plus, if you read my post below, I am not a racist dude, if I have something to tell you, I will and did. You are sorry, anything to stir trouble. Come'on man... A Ph.D. you can do better!
