My Mexican novia goes to church about 3-4 times a week, but she combines the Catholic religion with some Aztec Indian magic and new age stuff. In some parts of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic they practice Santaria which is a combination of the Catholic religion and black magic. This is also done by many of the drug smugglers on the border towns in Mexico. I went to a Cinco De Mayo party last night with my Mexican buddies and one of my buddies was telling me that there were some drug dealers next door to him a few years ago and he woke up and there was his other Puerto Rican neighbor in front of the drug dealers house with a dead chicken and he was doing some kind of spell to "rid the drug dealers out of the neighborhood" The next week the police raided the house and it was shutdown. There are also alot of the devout christian chruches in the Mexican area of Detroit and most of the Mexican guys I know stay away from these girls because they are ultra-conservative. If you get into a relationship with them, get ready to forced to quit drinking, quit smoking and quit whatever other bad habits you have. Most Mexican guys like to hang out at the bar after work and talk with the boys and there wife's do not mind but with these ultra-christian latina girls, there would be no way they would put up with it. I live in a suburb of Detroit about four miles away from the Mexican neighborhood so I get alot of feedback from other Mexicans on culture and everything else.

Just a little info: Jeff
Well, if you read Matthew 16 Jesus asked Peter "who do you think I am" Peter replied: The Christ the Messiah the son of the living God" Jesus replied "God has blessed you Simon son of Johnah for my father in heaven has personally revealed this to you, this is not from any human source. You are Peter a stone; and upon this rock I will build my church" The rock in question was either Jesus himself, or Peter the first great leader of the Catholic church. So it's up to interpretation. Reguardless it was Jesus's idea.
I think Jesus dicussed the situation about reading the bible, when he discussed in Matthew 23 "Everything they do is done for show." Jesus exposed the hypocritical attitudes of the religious leaders. They knew the scripitures but did not live by them. So reading is for guidance, what you do in practice is the key.

People in my wifes church have a strong interest in learning english. The church has started an english studies institute. Many persons in my wifes family are studying english.I asked my wife why this connection between the church and studying english. She said many people were told in prophisies to study english, that it would help them in their future. My brother in law,a mechanical engineer who hasn't been able to get an engineering job for years has been told he will move to America, get a good job and raise a family here. The english institute is very interested in meeting english speaking people. One of my friends was there last year and the class wanted to meet him and talk to him in english.
Also the church started a political arm, again because they were supposedly told by god to do this.It is called MIRA,and the slogun is something like politicians should serve the people, not themselves. In the recent elections they were able to elect a senator to the Colombian national senate,Alexandra Moreno Piraquive.
