... in response to Diablo:  Give us an update., posted by Throw on Apr 19, 2002

Hey Throw,

Just got in a few days ago and still kind of settling in.  I'm staying in small apartment in the North that was recommended to me.  I doubt the gorilla read this board as someone suggested the other day but on the off chance that they do, I'll tell you exactly where in a private note.  I like our old apartment better but this place is nice and I have no complaints.

Haven't made by to Peter's yet but I think this may be the night.  I'll say hello for you.

On the mujeres front, been catching up with old friends but I had a real date last night.  Someone I knew from past travels.  It was nice, we went to Rancho de Jonas.  We both had the baby beef.  The spousa of a gringo on this board, recommended a friend of hers to meet.  I'm planning on meeting her soon.  Hey I was even thinking about calling your wife's friend Carolina and seeing if she was interested in going to Peter's. I'm not sure what I did with her number though...ask Vivi for me. (-:

I'm seeing more or less the same amount of gringos as in the past despite the recent problems.  In San Jose when I go to the mall I never run into anyone I know.  In Cali, always it seems.  This weekend I was there and ran into a gringo who I had met two years ago at Mi Media Naranja.  He was sitting on a bench with one of my Calena amigas and it turns out they met through that new agency (Maritza) that was mentioned recently here.  Anyway my amiga spoke well of Maritza for anyone who might be interested in the agency.

I feel a little less secure this time.  I'm not sure this is based on anything real but with the election approaching I think people are more tense.  On the plane ride in, I sat next to this beautiful Calena and we talked the whole way from Miami.  She was curious about why I had come to Cali at such a bad time and I didn't have the guts to tell her the absolute truth as I don't think she would have approved.  Her name was Claudia and her family are well to do and live in Ciudad Jardin.  It makes a certain amount of sense but it's clear to me that those who have more are also more preoccupied with the problems and those who have less.....  For instance, she thought I was crazy to grab taxis off the street but I think that's what most of us do.  I've probably done it 500 times and never a problem.  Anyway, it was great talking to her (she's married) but she gave me her number in case I needed help with anything while in Cali.  I thought that was really sweet and I can't imagine too many Americanos doing the same.

I had a bad experience at Gregory's steakhouse on Sexta and about Calle 30.  The waitor was acting funny and grabbed the check and my cash from out of my hands before I had a chance to look at it closely.  I asked if the propina (tip) was included and he said no.  A couple of minutes went by and I asked for the bill again as he'd taken it.  He came back with a different bill, no itemization and just the total that he claimed was without tip.  I asked him again and for the original and he returned with it.  Well it turns out the amount I paid included a tip, he was just looking for some extra cash.  Anyway, the food was just average and at 100,000 pesos including a couple drinks I thought it was a ripp-off.  Anyway I'd avoid it....

Well gotta run....keep in touch.  If HODA's reading this, send me a note as I remember you're headed this way....

Another expensive place where the waiters will take advantage if you{re not paying attention is Arrieros Del Norte catty-corner from Chipichapi. Happened to me a long time ago but will never go back. The ambience is still nice at Rancho de Jonas but the food is better at Simon Parilla two blocks south. I{ve been in Cali five days now visiting with my novia. They've searched my bags on the last two arrivals. Other than that I haven't seen evidence of the so called stepped up security at the airport. Things seem to be fairly quiet here except for the campaign up in the Fallarones de Cali to free the kidnapped lawmakers. Palmira is now having guerilla incursions. They ripped out some atms yesterday. Stopped by both Maritza's and Luz Amparos. Not many Americans at the moment. On Monday we'll fly up to Providencia for a week and following that a short trip to Barranquilla and a day in Cartagena I hope. My friend there tells me there have been recent problems not with guerrilla but highway robbers on intercity buses between those cities especially at night. Also yesterday bombs in Cartagena but I haven't seen the paper yet. So that plan has me concerned. We'll see...

3 dead, 5 seriously injured. Four bombs altogether, 1 of them went off while attempting to evacuate the office building 'Edificio Inteligente' in the Chambacú business district, killing a building security guard and a woman office worker. More than 200 others were evacuated safetly from the building. Another bomb in the same building was discovered and safetly disarmed.

In the residendal district bario de Magna, two bombs were discovered, one was safetly disarmed, the other exploded while authorities were attempting to disarm it, kill one bomb squad officer.

Athorities blame all four bombs on FARC and have 3 suspects in custody. Telephones and electric service were disrupted for several hours.
