Hey Aaron,
Where you been?Still going to do the Aussie Gig?Are you going to make it to Colombia first?
Saw my cousin last week who used to live in Austrailia. He said the guys there were very prejudiced when he was there 25 years ago.He said the girls would like you but the guys could be a problem. He said the guys were just mean. Two guys he worked(construction) with were having a fued and they would shoot each others windows out.Hopefully its better now.I know its a great opportunity for you but you could always change your mind if it doesn't work out.I don't mean to be negative.Hopefully these were rare examples then and non existent now.Probably depends on the social class you are dealing with.My cousin said the guys he worked with were proud of being offspring of people sent too a penal colony and loved to steal anything they could.
Hopefully someone can update us on what its like now.No offense Aussie guys, just reporting what I heard.

Hi Pete,

I'm making all the preparations to relocate as we speak. Yes, I'll make it to Colombia just before I move. I'll be in Cali for 10 days. Then, I have to hurry back home to catch the flight to Australia.

I will be living in Melbourne, Victoria. Which is about 3 hours from Sydney I think. Melbourne is considered a very modern and multicultural city. I'm expecting the best. While I'm there, the travelling wont stop, I'll probably be travelling for work related things to different places in Europe and Asia.

To give readers a little background info, I'll be working as an educational researcher on an international project across 32 countries. The goal of this project is to compare academic acheivement of high school students across 32 countries, unfortunately Colombia isn't one. This is a project of academic achievement assessment.

This is a very important topic right now for the USA, especially with President Bush's agenda towards education.

Take Care,
Aaron

Greetings Aaron....

I worked in Melbourne about 10 years ago for about 1 year....

Nice town...Stayed in the eastern suburbs in a town named Lilydale....
The town was close to the Blue Dandegongs..or something like that...(mountains)

People nice...less complicated than SoCal....

Wide open....happy hour similar to frenzy....

Rolling road blocks where all drivers must take a breathalizer test....

Women wonderful....would group around me to hear me talk....
Politeness and manners go a LONG way there....
It's just such a difference for the women....

Phillips island is a nice place a short drive to the beaches...

Its a wonderful place to live....also a long way away....

Have a wonderful time....

Aaron,
Good for you, sounds like a great job and it could be very valuable to your career.Don't let my comments discourage you.Actually my cousin was in Austrailia from about 1969-1972,then New Zealand untill 1978.Things could have changed alot, and he was associating with construction workers, not the leading edge of social change. If we look at change in this country from the 1950's to the 1980's it would be a mistake to think it is anything like the 1950's.
These comments were fresh in my mind.I told him about you and these things came up.
When do you go to Cali?

Pete,

I'll be in Cali from May 1st til May 14th. I originally planned to visit some friends in Costa Rica on the 12th and 13th, but other things came up. So, that will give me a couple extra days to stay in Cali...I can't complain about that.

Aaron,
Sounds like one of those times where alot is going to happen in a short period of time. After years of graduate school it should be exciting.
Keep us posted as the time gets near. And I hope you don't forget us when you get to Austrailia.I for one will be very interested that works out.I presume you will be associating with alot of people in the academic community. That should make the transition easier.

Hello Pete.  Sorry, but got kind of a chuckle from your post.  I deal with Aussies and Kiwis on a regular basis.  Yes, some Aussie guys can be kind of "macho" and yes some Aussie women might like AM.  In some ways, social habits are behind that of the USA.  However, at the end of the day, there are all types of people down under.  Actually, they are not that different from us, with the exception of the accent...lol    I know your comments weren't meant to generalize, but in case anyone is wondering if the sterotypes are true, not really.

Its kind of like people who think all Californians surf, play beach volleyball and know a hollywood celebrity.....lol

Take care,

Mark
