...and we applied for the ITIN 3 weeks earlier.
This ITIN is thru IRS as Chas mentioned.
A school can usually use a temp SS# (what difference would it make?)
Hang in there and wait for the permanent SS#..

Thanks! That's exactly what we're doing! My wife was in tears thinking she wouldn't get the volunteer job being offered her because of not having the SSN. However, it turns out they will hold the position until she receives it. Her daughter is in the same state and cannot receive any financial aid from the college she's applying to without it. THX!

Yeah, here in Dallas there are a variety of foreign students eager to enroll in school ASAP...Viet, Chinese, Latins .. you name it..no prob with the SSN#. At Richland College , they made one up for Svetlana until she got her real live permanent one. The ITIN is an ace in the hold mainly to claim dependents for the tax thing just in case.

While most people report no problems, there have been some isolated instances of some serious shakedowns as a result of not having the stamp.  Odds are you are o.k.  We also we considered getting the stamp, but decided not to.  If you want to be totally safe, depart Ukraine through a city other than Kiev or depart Kiev through a country such as Russia where she can travel on her Ukrainian passport.

My wife visits Kiev three or four times a year, so that's a good number of times she's done this trip without the exit stamp and so far she's had no problems, her Ukrainian friends here in England also report the same.

We did consider to get this exit stamp, but the info we got was so confusing and contradictory, and the cost of all the translations of documents needed for the Ukrainian Embassy and the "gifts" for the local Zhek office would've come to a pretty penny, my wife suggested we jump that hoop if and when we ever come to it, and if that happens we'll route her out through Poland or some other place.

BTW We'll soon be in the process of applying for her British Citizenship, not that she really wants to be British but it will ease travel to other countries.
