I am wondering if the phone cards we use to call Ukraine will work the opposite way.  I want to stay in contact with my family, but we will be using a neighbors phone.  If I can't use them to call home, what kind of card can I use, or is there an inexpensive way to call collect?

Depends on the phone card.  A number of them do.  Check out http://pointme.to/expresspin  I ordered a card there for my lady when she was in Vladivostok earlier this year.  Connections were good, but she said every now and again the access number wouldn't work.

Using UMC to SMS is a very viable alternative, and is available rather inexpensively throughout Ukraine.

It is a feature of most mobile telephone technology - and it allows your girl (in Ukraine) to send you (in America) short messages that will display on your mobile telephone, or in your e-mail.

You will need to check with YOUR mobile network provider and/or hers - depending on how you wish to utilize the service.

Jeff, depending on where you go, I would get a phone there. I stayed in kiev and was able to get phones cards real easy in the underground, they where cheap, and realiable. I am not sure to of the name of the card that I used, but it looked like a Play Card "Ace's" it was red & white. WorldExchange.com also has cards that you can buy that can be used from Ukraine to US.
Hope this helps.
