Just thought I d would pass a few tidbits along,

I was under the wrong impression that Ukraine shuts off their hotwater during all of their summer... when I went in May of 2001 sure enough the hot water was shut off ... but my sweetie tells me it is only for about 10 days or so while they work on their equipment. I just happened to be there during this period... also -- we just had our electricity go on and off a few minutes ago... it does this where I live at least a couple of times a week... sometimes during a storm but sometimes like today when it is sunny... for no apparent reason at all... my sweetie tells me that this doesnt happen in Cherkassy... hmmm perhaps our power company needs to take a few lessons from the power company in cherkassy ukraine???  LOL

to all -- a great Labor Day,

Keith

I think the duration of shutting down the hot water and heat in the winter is regional and from I heard from my fiancee even could amount to a small area within a town.  She has had no hot water for a month and last winter, they had no heat and I bought them a floor heater.  She tells me that a percentage of people pay the bill for hot water and heat, but then there are many who cannot afford the costs, so the utilities are off for everyone.  It's a tragedy, especially when washing clothes, because it takes alot of hot water to do this.  Now she has to heat the water on the stove and it takes five to six hours of hard work to scrub the clothes clean because of the time required waiting for the water to finish.  Yes, I did experience on all three of my trips to Ukraine the bath with bucket method and we even had no water at all on one day.  I wish there were some way the mafia could cut loose with some of their crooked cash and treat their customers to some creature comforts.

BTW,

Also something that I personally didn't know:

Today is a holiday there. It is the "Day of Knowledge" and celebrates the day school starts (or would start if it weren't Sunday).

Big celebration, and even some movie theaters opened for free to the public.

Interesting holiday...

Is this universal in Ukraine? Or is it local to Kherson?

My Fiancee and her daughter also celebrated this holiday and went to the school.  It's universal in Ukraine from what I understand.
