My wife and I are few day from our first year in America together. She left behind her father and younger brother. Her father the other day had a car accident and is being black mailed by the police. they want to put him in jail or pay.  Does anyone know if we can some how get him to America. What ideas do you all have.  This could happen to anyoneyou guys.  My wife is not handling the problem very well. She does her father could not live in jail especially now during the winter. The Ukraine treats the citizens like trash. This board exists because of the desparation for peolple of the Ukraine can escape. I only saying these thing as warning for all who leave family behind. Remember you don't just mary the woman but you marry the family.

Thank for any ideas you all might have

They probably know that he has a daughter in USA and trying to get some money out of him. Just tell your father-on-law to pay them off and ask how much money he needs.

The other option is to invite him on the tourist visa and just stay in the country. But she still has a brother there, so it may complicate things for him later.

He's got alot of people in Ukraine and they can check into it to see if the accident really happened.

I personal find bribing a cop or his boss a bad idea.  Sort of like doing that here stateside, could get you in hot water even faster.

Yes, to a Lawyer if this really happened.

Was anyone hurt in the accident or was it just a fender bender?

Don, unfortunately, I cannot think of a way you can bring the father to the U.S. except perhaps get him a visitor's visa and have him here illegally and then look into your legal options.  As I understand the current INS rules, a U.S. citizen can bring his wife and children and THE CITIZEN'S parents to the U.S.  I think it is difficult, if not impossible, to obtain permanent residency for your wife's parents based on your marriage until she becomes a citizen.  Of course, there might be some other legal way to get him to the U.S., perhaps on a work visa.  You will need an employer to sponsor him.

Are you sure that the accident really happened?

I know that such things do happen... but it seems a little neat and tidy....

I'm not saying that your wife is even in on it... but it might not hurt to have someone else check it out.

I would make sure it is legitimate.  Assuming it is legitimate I would Western Union them the money they need.

My wife wants to know if anyone died in the road accident?
If so there is only one way out and that is a BIG bribe even in our standards,and may require your wife going their to handle this.

No one has died yet, but the hospital isn't helping. We are looking for a lawyer and her younger brother knows the system.  My wife can't go back without problems, she did not get an exist stamp.

Unfortunitly my wife suspects you may have big problems sense the man is in the hospital. It sounds like your only hope is Money, and the money will go not only to the injured person but also to the police, everyone wants a piece of the pie. For example my wifes friend had a head on collision and killed a pregnant woman and disabled 2 people and he paid $75,000 in bribes plus he is paying a pension to one injured mans daughter until she is 18. I wish you a good outcome in this mess.

Your father-in-law needs a lawyer. The lawyer could negotiate a way out of the situation or maybe set up a bribe with the cops' superiors that would circumvent the blackmail. You may have to send money on this one.

You are probably right, Barry.  I would suggest the bribe in Ukraine.  That may offer more solace than trying to get him to the U.S.

I once had a crooked business partner. He was Mexican and he had a lot of dealings in Mexico. He told me that when you are in a legal tangle such as the one described, you never want to bribe the peons, IE the street cops, but their commanders to get out of the jam. You have to go up the pecking order in situations like that. What happens when you start bribing the underlings, then the next one in the pecking order wants to be greased and so on until you have to bribe a judge. You wind up paying 10's of 1000's instead of a few hundred.
In this situation, only a good crooked lawyer(I know that's an oxymoron) is going to have the grease to fix the problem.

BTW when you accuse your partners of fraud, it becomes impossible to stay in business with them... and of the course, the business failed.

I actually expensed a bribe on one business trip to South America.  The federal government has a law against bribing foreign government officials but it was cheaper that the alternative, which was be stuck here for a week or two before you get any of the equipment you need.  I noticed the clerk got only about 10% of the bribe money.  

Barry, your experience should have taught you that foreign business partners are less likely to be ethical.  An expensive lesson I learned also.  

I think you gave good advice.  Bribes are necessary to resolve certain difficulties in foreign countries and in this case, it's probably cheaper than bringing him to the USA.  Doesn't he have to get some kind of police clearance first before immigating?  But, as you say, get somebody that knows the system and be sure and go up the food chain if needed.
