Waited in line at the social security office yesterday for 90 minutes only to be told that we either had to apply for an EAD from the INS or wait until we got married before my fiancée could get a SSN. I remember reading an earlier post, which said there was an executive order saying they should issue SSN's to K1 visas. The guy at SS Office said that was rescinded in 1995. It is not imperative that she has one but it would make things a whole lot easier if she could. At least I managed to talk my way into having her get a library card!
The "English as a second language" course is 30 minutes drive away and it is taught by a Spanish teacher and full of south Americans. This is a problem.
At the public health center they gave us a certificate so that her son could attend school. We even had to have a dental check before he could start at school. We have to go back in 30 days for MMR, Hepatitis B and Chicken Pox inoculations. I reckon we should boycott the Medical centers in Moscow that use extortion. They told my fiancée that unless she paid for vaccinations for her son they would not give her the medical exam results. Those vaccinations are not required for the visa and at $27 a pop compared to being free back Stateside it really ticks me off.
A few other observations are as follows. Russian boys are very rough compared to their US counterparts. All my friends want to meet my fiancée. Russian people do not usually pay directly for heating so I am expecting my next gas bill to be horrendous. Last night I had a meal that would have graced the table in the best gourmet restaurant. Today we are clothes shopping. Look out Old Navy!
What a wonderful world!

Peter,

Glad things are going well so far.  As far as SSNs, there is a copy of the November 2000 SSA directive on Doc Steen's Marriage Visa site.  People who have printed it and taken it with them have had success.
