There are some that will argue you do not need to learn Russian at all. Indeed, I know several guys that did not bother and once they have found their ladies and returned to America, knowledge of Russian is nearly worthless (in practical terms). However, it is an invaluable skill while you are pursuing finding your lady - and it simply opens doors to you that will be tightly closed otherwise. For Olya and I it was entirely critical. If I had not spoken Russian, I am quite certain our relationship would have taken much longer to develop - and possibly, never developed at all.

Bob's suggestion of the Pimsleur Comprehensive program(s) is the route I took, and I found it relatively simple and efficient to learn with their tapes. I've not had the occasion to try one of the Air Force programs he spoke of, but it sounds challenging!

Good luck,

- Dan

Here's the links the the facility in Colorado.

I think unfortunately it's only open to Air Force personel.  I thought they had one on the West Coast open to anyone willing to pay a fee, but I may have been mistaken.  Still, this page does have a few useful links under the various languages listed.
