World Cup Soccer humiliations
« on: October 13, 2017, 10:56:59 PM »
Team USA failed to qualify for the World Cup 2018 to be held in Russia next year with a loss to Trinidad and Tobago.
Chile, who won the Copa America last year in 2016 failed to qualify as well.
Argentina lost to Chile in that 2016 Copa America during a shootout with superstar Lionel Messi missing his attempt. He walked away from international play after that embarrassment but returned and Argentina qualified for the 2018 World Cup.
World Cup 2014 host Brazil lost to Germany 7 - 1.

Of the above, the last item was probably the most painful for its nation.

Being from the USA, I wish we were still in it. We really enjoyed the last World Cup games more than ever. But we'll look for some underdog team to maybe take it all, teams to follow and root for who haven't won it all.

That 7 to 1 loss Brazil took at home was unreal, that's for sure.

Wankmar de Silva Santos, Jr did not play for that 7-1 loss, but I wish he had!

I was in Rio when it happened. You would have honestly thought Brazil had lost a war and the invading force had plans to enslave the entire population. I've never seen so many grown men crying in my life. Not a tear here and there with a quiet wimper...but literally weeping.

Aww, go on with yer bad self...Next think we know, you'll be yakking about that 'bug' sport, 'Cricket'.
Crazy. One player's earned close to 19 million dollars playing that sport.

And he's in 10th place! Number one earning Cricket star, Sachin Tendulkar, has made the USD equivilant of 118 million $$$$ playing that sport, a game unbeknownst to most of world, the vast majority who don't know a wicket from a ticket.
Whether you think you can or think you can't--you're right!

Maybe it is not widely popular/known in the Americas but to the rest of the world cricket is very popular & widely known.

It is the 3rd most popular sport in the world after Football (Soccer) & Basketball and the 2nd most fans based with 2.5 billion fans (that is about 1/3 of the world's population).

If we were all forced to wear a warning label, what would yours say?

KFC,

You're right. And a lot of folks in the USA don't realize how big Formula 1 racing is in other parts of the world either.

Wow, just realized this is my 5000th post. If they were all this short, or broken up a bit into multiples, I'd probably have a couple more, lol.

The odds at this point have Germany as the favorite to win the 2018 World Cup, with Brazil next.  Spain, Argentina, France, Belgium.... etc.
Traditional strong teams who didn't make the cut include Italy, Netherlands and Chile.

Peru just made it into the World Cup 2018 by defeating New Zealand, but now their steep odds just got steeper with a suspension of their best player, Paolo Gurerrero.  He tested positive for a stimulant which he claims came form a tea of coca leaf that he was taking to combat the flu.  The tea is available in country, I had it to deal with the altitude of Cusco.  Didn't work, I still got sick at altitude.
