Trip Report: Peru
« on: January 04, 2015, 06:30:39 PM »
I was sitting here reminiscing about how I pulled a Christmas miracle out my ass while stuffing my face w/ cream cheese cake, I figure it'd be a great time for a trip report

Mira Flores, Lima, Peru
I had a blast in Peru. Of course I went t cusco to do the normal tourist stuff but I like to Fiesta so I was ready to get to the meat and potatoes of it.
Lima is a hell of a city w/ lot of stuff and pretty women every where. Which  was great. Cleary that part of Lima has a lot money and food and what not was a bit high but when you're in a touristy part of the city you can expect that
One thing I did notice is that I don't ever recall seeing the sun. At night I would go downtown and club hop a bit. The first night I was pretty damn fun. i went out to some where in El Centro and I was just dancing not giving a damn. It was crazy because quite a few chicks walked up to me and started dancing w/ me. I was like I'm the damn man.
After a lil while though i got tired of paying double the rate of Lomo Saltado, and people asking me for random sh*t. I actually had one girl while i was looking down on my phone. I look up and shes a few feet away from me staring me down. She tells me that her stuff was stolen and if I was American and I could her, wtf?! I was so creeped out. After about the third day, I would walk about 3 blocks from the Marathon / Round About and cross the bridge. I liked out as the tourist were too afraid to go there. I got meals at the normal price and it was great.
I did enjoy Pisco Sours and I also learned to stay away from the free entry bars / clubs in favor for the pay ones for a few reasons. The tourists don't got to pay ones even though they are cheaper. A freaking bar at a free bar was around 30soles at the pay ones I was only paying 7 or so at pay clubs. I also noticed the prepago didn't go to the pay ones either, probably cuts into there profits haha. There were a few clubs I walked into and it was only women, 1 in particular had like 15 girls and 1 guy. It was at that point it I realized what it was going on. I've been a bar/club that had such a huge female to male ratio. I did talk to a few girls but not realizing that most were pre pagos but there are a lot of nice looking women about.
Day to day I walked along the coast, one day I tried to walk to coast because the taxi showed me where the jail was at, After about 6 or so miles I gave up. But they're extending the Malecon and its very beautiful.
I had a lot of fun peru and would suggest anyone to go there. But I did [snip]ing hate putting TP in the trash can, that sh*t was nasty.

If wanted I can do another on Ec, since I rented an apartment this trip was pretty different from the other times I went. A lot has changed in the short year I'd been away.

Thanks for the report Kai. Nice to see another report about a country that is not Colombia! I think I'd like visiting Lima for the women but that weather does sound miserable (most of the time).

I take it that since you went to Cusco you went up to Machu Picchu? If so, how was the weather up there? I've not gone there yet but I hear it can be hit or miss with plenty of cloudy/overcast days given the altitude, etc.

Yeah Miraflores is expensive. Probably the most expensive area in Peru.

Yeah Pisco sours are great.

Where were those bars? On the calle de las pizzas or near Parque Kennedy? That area is known for having lots of prostitution.

Glad to hear you enjoyed Peru. Next time you should check out northern Peru. It is very different from Lima but it is great too and has lots of pretty Peruanas.

Weather in Lima isn't miserable all the time. During the summer the weather can be quite sunny and nice a lot of the time.

Quote
Summers are warm, humid, and sunny. Daily temperatures oscillate between lows of 18 °C (64 °F) to 22 °C (72 °F), and highs of 24 °C (75 °F) to 29 °C (84 °F).

Although it isn't like northern Peru where the weather is sunny pretty much all year long.

I didn't go, It got too expensive. They keep telling you need this entry ticket, that ticket, bus tickets, train tickets, tour guide tickets. I just said f*ck and didn't do it. Cusco was kind of the cool side but you're either walking up hill or downhill and you warm up quickly. it was cloud cover damn near every single day from what I remember. I don't know if altitude sickness is a real thing but I didn't have a bit of indigestion for the first day but that was it. Don't even bother trying to the locals either, you're invisible to them. You might get to talk to some other tourist chicks or maybe a chick that works there and not from the coutry but that'll be as good as it get. I met some chicks from Argentina that worked at the mushroom bar in Cusco but that was it

Yeah, that's the calle de las pizzas (pizza street): an alley with bars, clubs and restaurants on both sides. Where else did you go to party? Did you check out Barranco as well?

I mainly stayed in that area, I wasn't there long enough to expand my circle. The dude that was at the hotel told me Barranco and I regretted not going. I honestly don't really like being around a bunch of tourist.

There was a a club called 'Son of Cuba' and I was leaving, I was telling the Guards and outside to have a good night. This short guy he said 'oh you speak english', I say yea, whats up. I told him you can come in this place but its only salsa and Bachatta. Dude then goes to say he could dance to spanish music. C'mon guy, serioulsy

Yeah I know that club. Calle de las pizzas is where all the gringos go (which is why all the hookers and gold diggers go there as well). Barranco is a bit less touristy (although you see gringos there too). San Miguel is a decent area too and there are almost no tourists there.

Yea, pretty much nailed it. I had like 5~6 prepagos propostion. It was something right Tv show or something. While I was there I saw these gringo get shot down by these pame pre-pagos. I always thought they anything w/ anybody as long you have the money, that's not the case. I saw soo many corney gringos get shot down it was funny. I thought about writeing a post a bout, it was pretty funny. You're right though, I should had checked out some other places but I wasn't there long enough and I was unsure about trying to scope a new area when I already had a good one, you know

Are most of the ladies in Peru on the short --say 5'0 tall side of the tape? Slim, medium, thick? I'm sure there's all types, but generally speaking... There's some Peruvian cuties around here and they tend to be short and sometimes a little chubby, but nice curves and easy on the eyes. Noticed quite a few wear their hair a bit short too.

Interesting. I thought the same, that those women will sleep with anyone with money. Guess not.

Yes, most Peruanas (and the men too) are short. As for body types, you can find all kinds of body types in Peru. But yeah, the vast majority are on the short side (with a few exceptions here and there, especially among the Peruanas with more European blood).

Here are some examples of cute Peruanas  ;)

I think virtually every one in S.America is short. The Colombian girl was tall at around 5'6 I thought. 5'2~5'4 seems to be where every stands. I thought girls where thick but not fat I like girls so this doesn't bother me. I never really noticed the stuff w/ the hair, but I did noticed the women in Lima seem to appear more fashionable than what I'm use to seeing

I guess it's harder to stick out in a tourist town that is inundated with tourists all the time. What about Lima? I am guessing it gets a fair share of international guests as well...but you found the local women more approachable there.

Besides the amount of tourists there, I think Cusco also has a pretty different culture compared to Lima or northern Peru. The population is more pure indigenous (Quechua) and the culture I think a bit more traditional/conservative.

Miraflores, Lima is full of gringos, yeah. Most other parts of Lima not so much (but they are also usually a bit more dangerous and not as developed and nice).

If you really want to stick out as a gringo in Peru you have to go to the smaller cities in the provinces. The city where I got the most stares and eye contact from women in the streets is Piura, in the north. In some of these cities girls will even blow kisses at you as you walk past or shout "Mira un gringoooo!" lol!  ;D

Sounds like the Philippines--especially in areas outside of Manila and Cebu City or away from the expensive resorts. Outside of those places, I call it "The Rock Star Effect". I've gone weeks w/o seeing a non Asian person at times. One time, I finally met a British guy at some remote hot springs about three hours from any big city and it was like Stanley and Livingstone, meeting up in the wilds of Africa after a long period. (From the great old movie, after months w/o any sight of: "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?")

People in such areas of the Philippines, male and female alike will approach you--very friendly. Some after a few minutes of sizing you up, will offer to 'tour you' around, invite you to their homes to eat, etc. Things like cab drivers and even hotel employees offering introductions to sisters and nieces are fairly common.
Whether you think you can or think you can't--you're right!

Well I don't think you really become like a rockstar in Peru, but yeah, you do attract a lot of attention and curiosity as an obvious foreigner in certain places, from both men and women.

No, you won't become a rockstar anywhere. It is just that if you go to certain places where foreigners are rare you stand out and attract attention. And the things I mention like girls blowing kisses (or taking my picture, etc.) did happen but they were rare.

I've already come to the consensus that most guy's that come here and ask questions won't make any moves unless they have something secured in their country of choice thought. If you're a gringo and you go where all the gringos go, you can't stand out. You're not special. I think you'd be more successful going and doing what the locals do but I think most would be too scared to this.

I actually had a thought I wanted to post but I don't want to called race baiter. I met a white guy from Ohio and we talked about it. it was a very interesting conversation

One of the reasons you have soo many tourist from all over the place in Miraflores is that they are on there way or coming back from Cusco where they visit Machu Picchu.

I found Miraflores fun WHEN I was courting my wife during various trips. Once I started going back as a married man the place lost all interest.

The lack of sunshine, poverty, trash, traffic, really stated standing out to me. When my wife and I go back there to visit her family, I only want to stay for a week before I have had enough. My wife can stay longer.

Those are things that don't bother you as much initially, but after you've been there a few times, along with a few other things typical of non first world--heck, just countries other than the USA, you begin to miss and the lack of some niceties can start to grate on you. Your health and immune system can experience changes too.

I'll have a bacon cheese burger with my flu shot, please! :D

Yeah you're right about the tourists. Most of them are on their way to cusco (or coming back). There are also quite a few expats who live their though.

I guess you are talking about Lima in general, because the upscale areas like Miraflores don't really have a lot of trash and poverty, it is where the rich "pitucos" live (although the traffic is still pretty chaotic, it is Peru after all). Miraflores is very developed and almost like a first world city actually.

However, you are right, most of Lima isn't like Miraflores and the city has a lot of areas that are pretty dirty, chaotic and poor. This is also Lima:

I can understand why some people don't like it, but personally I love Lima and Peru in general, despite its problems.

You know when I first started visiting Medellin in 2003, it took some real balls even to get on the plane. Before I left the first time, all my coworkers were saying goodbye like they never expected to see me again. Now we know that Americans are a bunch of pansies who wet their pants even thinking about a Third World country but Medellin in the early 2000s was a dangerous place. One time after my wife dropped me off at the airport, the bus she was riding back home got hijacked by the FARC in Itaqui. And that's just one of many similar tales I could tell.

Knowing what I know now, I have no problems travelling all over Colombia with a couple of my kids by bus and taxi but that's after having a lot of Colombian experience under my belt and being fairly fluent in Spanish. Of course Medellin is a lot safer place these days but I think novices still need a wingman or guide until they get their sea legs.

Not in Peru obviously, but been in areas where Muslim and Communists fought with the govt. for control, while disparate elements of the military wrestled for govt control--I was even in the middle of attempted military coup in the capital once, the whole area placed under martial law.

Still can say out of all those groups and times, I found the 'other' visiting tourists to be the most annoying element to me having a good time--there were just a lot of obnoxious idiots.

Not only that, but each nation's tourists were annoying to me in uniquely different ways. I was told by my wife, her family and from other natives that they too find certain nation's tourists to have their own unique ways of being jerks. Probably the ones liked best were folks from Scandinavian countries. I have to say I found them to be pretty cool (and not in the Germanic way) too. Aussies and Canadians ranked up there too.

Whether you think you can or think you can't--you're right!
