I am just leaving BAQ today and I can tell you guys for a fact that there are still many, many beautiful women floating around that city who seem very friendly and nice. We had a birthday party for my son there and most of the good looking young Colombian women seemed to be with their same men. They seem to be pretty loyal. Lots of talk among these young women of children, family stuff. Other than the nice women, BAQ does not have much going for it. Dirty, hot, sweat, and pretty expensive. The only well organized business I have ever seen there is Jamie's place. BTW be careful there. Saw my first violent crime...a 55-60 year old lady shot in the stomach by a guy in broad daylight at a grocery store. If those losers are shooting old ladies obviously they have absolutely no respect for anyone or anything. If you are going to any women's house in Centro, South, or Soledad be careful because most of the taxis will not go there or will charge very high rates. And the guys who will go there look pretty shaky sometimes. When we use the hotel to call for the cab or we do it by cell they always take us. But charge more. If you hail from the street most will not take you. I think they must be obligated to take you if they are sent by the dispatcher.

Thanks for posting. It's always good to hear one more perspective, and of course real-life experiences.  I hope to be going to BAQ within maybe the next 8-10 months, and knowing what areas to avoid and/or to be extra careful in, helps a lot. 
I am getting the same impression that starting up a business in Colombia is hard, even more so is having a successful one.  I would imagine that the un-employment situation for many of the ladies - the prospective dates and partners of Jamie's clients, is somewhat grim.  It's encouraging though to know that the ladies are still generally relationship and family oriented, and loyal.

My last week there I saw a shooting right outside my apartment in Villa Carolina.  Not a bad part of town.  It was a bit sobering, but not that surprising I guess.


I'm always amused by the guys that talk about letting their new girlfriends make decisions about where they go and their safety.  You barely know this girl and your going to trust her with your life......I don't think so.  Usually these girls haven't traveled around with a gringo much, and don't realize  how much risk there is to us.  Looking back, one of my dates that I met at Jamie's took me to some places I should not have ever gone.  Better in the beginning before you know the girl, to keep control, know exactly where you are going, and ask your translator or Jaime if the plan is a safe one.  After all Jaime wears a gun all the time.....

Jamie has mentioned the desire to expand to other parts of Colombia or possibly even to other countries in Latin America to me on several occasions. I also suggested Pereira to him. There's plenty of beautiful, nice, educated women there and it's not a city gringos frequent so we don't have the reputation we do in cities like Medellin or Bogota. However, this would require him to all but leave his business in Barranquilla to run itself. The success of his agency can be almost entirely attributed to his hands on approach and micro-managing his staff. He'd have to move to Pereira for a year to get things up and going, risking a significant loss of income from an already established operation in Barranquilla.
 
Villa Carolina is my stomping group. I stayed there for a while a couple of years ago and always recommend it to gringos as a place to hang out in Barranquilla...especially with its proximity to Buena Vista. It's definitely one of the safer, quieter parts of the city so what you saw happen surprises me as well.
 
I probably would not have mentioned on a public forum that Jamie usually carries a concealed weapon but now that the cats out of the bag, it's more to protect himself because of his hobby as a photographer. If you look on his website there are a couple of sections where he has taken some very good pictures of some not so populated places around Colombia. Outside of major cities, touristic pueblos and toll road booths, police presence in Colombia is almost nonexistent. Just imagine what could happen to someone that's obviously a foreigner riding around on a dirt bike alone in the middle of nowhere with a camera worth multiple thousands of dollars. I don't blame him for carrying for a second.
