Hey Ray,

I hope that your family is safe!  I haven't heard anything on the news yet. We rock and rolled a little at our house.

True...we do in this area.  Even one this small  could do some damage, considering that there are now many structures here built with "cement" blocks. (Many that I have seen are more like sand blocks) When Mt Mayon (350 miles away) rumbled, I watched a 15 foot crack spread along the second floor bedroom wall of our rental house. It was only an intensity 3.9 quake.  A nipa hut would do MUCH better with earthquakes than many of the modern structures in the Philippines. I believe that a strong quake  (6.0–6.9) would likely cause catastrophic damage here!

Late reports from the Philippines indicate that the earthquake of M 5.9 on March 16 in the provinces of Dinagat Islands and Surigao del Norte left 45 injured and 28 houses damaged. Two of the injured are still in the hospital. Houses were damaged in Brgy, Roxas and in Brgy. Imme, Basilisa in Dinagat Islands with damage about P1 million. Damages included cracks in municipal and private buildings in Cagdianao and a cracked gymnasium and elementary school in Libo.

"28 houses damaged"...It must have been some major damage if it got reported!

Hey Dave,

From what I understand, most of the injuries were at the new Gaisano mall in Surigao City that had it's grand opening the same day the quake hit. The place was packed and some people made a run (stampede) for the exit and that's where people got injured (trampled).

We have many close relatives in Basilisa but nobody injured there. Our house a few miles away on Dinagat wasn't damaged.
