Jessica Sanchez
« on: March 15, 2012, 04:29:33 PM »
Anyone out there following American Idol this year?

This young 16-year-old girl, Jessica Sanchez is awesome! She is probably the acknowledged favorite to win this season.

She was born here in Chula Vista, San Diego. Jessica’s mom is a Filipina from Bataan, PI, and her dad is a Mexican-American originally from Texas who served in the Navy. Her grandfather is a Filipino also retired from the Navy.

I don’t believe her mom was a MOB, but not sure(?).

What's a MOB??  This about the only post my wife's ever had remote interest and she wants to know....

She was good--the Filipinos here are following her--otherwise they've lost all interest in Idol, along with "Glee"--since Filipina extraorinaire Charice isn't on it anymore.

I agreed with the judges that she didn't pick a great song to showcase her talent--but she intelligently explained they didn't give her much to choose from.

Cute, well mannered young lady with good confidence on stage---hope she takes it all...
Whether you think you can or think you can't--you're right!

Thanks Whitey,

I didn't think that anybody used the term 'mail order bride' anymore--that it was always at least a bit of a misnomer. It'd be interesting to find out just how close to that description the reality 'pre internet' was.

My wife recalls even in the 1990's, newspapers with men's pictures offering the option to  become pen and paper letter writing 'pen pals', but that for most, modesty and/or lack of money for overseas postage kept it from taking off.

Soooo---did agencies once exist that arranged marriages of Filipinas (or really women of any nation) with men in the USA, who never actually physically saw, never mind 'met' the women until they got off the plane or boat?

If I guy could look at a picture of a woman in a newspaper--catalog of sorts and say---"I'll have THAT one", I would think that fits the description 'Mail Order Bride".

I used to look at women's pictures in magazines and say "I'll take THAT one"--but that's a different story altogether....

Her father was a sailor, no? Probably before we left Subic, close to that era anyway. To stay with the old terms more likely a "War Bride" then a Mail Order

Mob (video gaming)  From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A mob, mobile or monster is a computer-controlled non-player character (NPC) in a computer game such as an MMORPG or MUD. Depending on context, all such characters in a game may be considered "mobs", or usage may be limited to hostile NPCs and/or NPCs vulnerable to attack.

Yes, the term "War Bride" would be more accurate in that case.

But her mother's dad is a retired US Navy man, so that is probably more likely how her mom got here, through her father.
