This is for the guys who in the future will be bringing the wife & fiancee over.

You have married your fiancee or made the committment and now want to bring her over to live with you - be proactive and not reactive.

Before you start the visa process, read the guides ,  the forms and their instructions - understand them,  know what is needed and when they are needed.
Have all the needed documents ready & also have back-up orginals - note there is an s at the end of originals.

Once you get that 2nd NOA - that is the time to get into gear and be a little more proactive.  Do not wait for snail mail from the government - there is a reason why they call it snail mail. And do not listen to the AVS (Automated Voice System) - talk to a live person. Most of the time your info will not be loaded/updated in the AVS - ours & a few other people I know wasn't. My wife have been here over a year but the same old message that was there at the beginning is still there "We have no record of your case #".  ::)

Welcoming her.

Start cleaning & converting your "man pad"  aka house/apartment way in advance -  clean a little here & a little there.  It do not have to be perfect (as it never will be)
but presentable.

Stock the house with various items - see Ray's list for items to buy.
There are a lot of items  on there that are non-perishable and can be bought weeks/months in advance. Do not wait until the last minute, gradually buy the non-perishable items as you go.  The hit on your wallet will not be severe as if you were to buy everything at once plus your time will be more managable.

Helping her adjust.

Have a way for her to communicate with her family back home.
Take her places and let her enjoy herself - this is now about her not you, so take her places she want to go/see not where you want to go/see.
Listen to her,  understand her needs and try to accomodate her.
Teach & show her how public transportation works in your area - there will be a time when she will have to travel on her own or if the need arise.
Do you want your wife to be working right away  or do you want her to learn "the system" first - it is your choice.

My wife told me on a few ocassions that she was very very happy that I took her  to various places around NYC and New Jersey - she enjoyed herself. We did all by public transportation & not by driving.

US documentation.

Wait about  2 week for her record of arrival to be in the SAVE-ASVI system then take her to the Social Security Administration office andhave her sign up for an SS card.

Get her a state ID.
I took my wife to the NYS DMV to get a state id - she presented her green card, passport w/visa & her SS card. Her id card (good for 8 years) came in the mail in less than 2 weeks.

Check to see what your state requirements are.

After all that is done  - enjoy life together.
If we were all forced to wear a warning label, what would yours say?

Of course we are loaded.
We are loaded with over 8 million attitudes and personalities - we have more than enough to spare.
We are loaded with every cuisine you can think as well as our  our creations - if you want a Manhattan Special or Reuben Sandwich, just ask.
We are loaded with almost every language spoken outside of their native land as well as our own dialect - Yo, I dont stand wat u saying.
We are loaded with kamikaze taxi driver from hell - you sure that you want some?

We are also loaded crude & rudeness - you got a problem with that. Oh wait, we have Robert so we are incredibly polite and helpful.  ;D

Robert, what is your favorite NY dish?

Kfc,

It's silly but simple--NYC thin crust pizza. That and kosher hot dogs and a good reuben sandwich. I've eaten at many dozens of ethnic 'joints', at the Four Seasons, the Plaza and Ritz Carlton and many others and while I like a nice fancy meal sometimes (if I don't have get too dressed up), I really miss the simple stuff you can grab and go with the most! There's not too many places you can find a knish at, outside of NYC--another simple 'comfort' food I miss. Can you still get an Egg Cream soda (NOT 'pop'--like they call sodas most other places) anymore?

Yep!!!
There are a few places that still sell it - Yonah Schimmel on Houston Street is one place. I usually buy knishes there which are great.  I know Ray's Candy in Alphabet City serve it but I am not sure if they are still open.

There are now other flavors beside chocolate & vanilla.

Robert, I don't think the folks know what we are talking about.  ;D

BG, the story goes like this.

One day, piggy placed his pants on the bed and asked his wife "who will be wearing those pants in the family?"
The wife look at the pants and saw that they were an enormous size 42 and that there is no way that she would fit into them.
She turn to the pigster and said "you will".

So for the moment piggy is wearing "the pants".  ;D

Then she showed him her panties and asked for him to put them on. He took one look and saw how small they were, and said "there was no way I can get into them."

She said, "Yes, and it's going to stay that way until you change your attitude."

I don't know my wife's sizes.  I know her approximate height and weight, but that is all.  I never shop for her clothes.

C'mon guys, you don't know your wife's sizes? whatsupwitdat.

It is not that difficult - size "0", "XS", "25/26" & "5/6".
It is not like she changes sizes everyday, you just have to know it once or twice and remember it - you don't necessarily have to be shopping for it.

Piglett--for warm weather, you'll save some time and money if you have your wife buy a few outfits and get her favorite personal hygiene products, etc over there. Don't forget to have her teeth cleaned and any cavities filled before she flies. At less than $5 bucks a filling, it's a whole lot cheaper than here, not to mention the thousands of dollars root canals will cost, if cavities are left unfilled. A lot of Filipinos rarely see a Dentist and it takes its toll later.

I know my wife's sizes for clothes and shoes. I'm even pretty good on knowing her siblings and parents sizes as well. I shop sometimes for her and she picks up things for me that are a little more 'edgy and modern' than I might usually go for. They're in good taste and her friends tell her "He looks good in that shirt" or whatever and she passes the compliment along to me later.

Worse thing about shopping for her is that occasionally I'll get something that she says she likes, but REALLY she doesn't like it too much and it doesn't get worn. Happened with what I thought was a nice lambskin leather skirt in black, but I should've known that's not her style.

Maybe she doesn't want to offend me, although we're pretty honest and open on our tastes and opinions. She definitely doesn't like plaid shirts or denim--Ralph Lauren's cowboy wannabe attire turns her off, but I still love and wear old denim shirts on weekends. I've mentioned a few times that she should be very upfront if she doesn't really like something I picked out for her, so that I can return it for $$$.
