In the VS Outlet Store, I smile when I see dozens of Hispanic chicks with fake boobs and Booty Pop inserts fighting each other like sharks in a feeding frenzy for bargains at the 40DD bra tables and XL panty tables, while the 34A bra and XS panty tables have a few Asian women calmly looking through the merchandise.   ;D

Ray

Hey Ray,

Ain't that the truth! One day at VS, I saw the Latinas tearing up the of tables and throwing many of the items onto the floor...as usual. A jealous, wide-bodied Latina salesbitch went over to the table with the smaller sizes and began yelling at  the 3 Asians (including my wife) who were calmly looking and neatly refolding items. Apparently the salesbitch was pissed and wanted to let off some steam, but  didn't want to offend her fellow Latinas, who were doing all of the damage! She must have thought that the petite, demure Asians would take her abuse and remain silent. HUGE mistake!!! While the other 2 ladies remained silent, my wife ripped into her and then the manager who suggested that the salesbitch "just need more coaching." Another BIG mistake. I did enjoy all of those 20% discount coupons from the corporate offices!  ;D But my wife has personally never shopped there again (5 years). The corporate office misspelled her name badly on the "apology letter," which only apologised for her "inconvenience" never addressing the rude, insulting behavior of the salesbitch.

Some of the stuff in the 'petite' sections of ladies stores would fit 4 foot, ten inch tall, 160 + pound women perfectly. Little if anything in  the "Petite' section of places like Macys seems to begin to fit my wife.

Remember that “Petite” sizes come in Small, Medium, Large, etc. My wife can wear a lot of the PS sizes.

Before Mervyn’s folded, they had some nice clothing lines in their Petite section that fit a 4’-11”, 93 lb woman. Macy’s is much harder to find a good fit. She occasionally buys jeans on sale in Macy’s but she has to hem them by removing about 4”.

She can find some pants that fit perfectly in the Junior section at JC Penney.

For pig, kfc, and others bringing your bride/fiancee over, I strongly recommend sending her some spending money to buy some jeans or other pants over there to bring with her.
Good advice Ray.
I am planning to do just that & we spoke about it. She only want to get about 3 pair of jeans in phil - she want to travel light.

Last week I exchanged coupons/vouchers with a friend, I gave him Staples coupons & he gave me vouchers for Express (it was given to him for x-mas but he do not wear express). I will use the Express voucher for Jeans. I could get about 6-7 pears of jeans on clearance with that voucher & only pay tax.

The voucher may expire before she gets here so I will go to Express when they have their "clearing out" sale & buy some jeans/pants - then she can return/exchange the one that do not fit or don't like.
If we were all forced to wear a warning label, what would yours say?

Ray,

We never seem to have any luck at JC Penneys and my wife worked there for a few weeks.

That was her first job before the school system hired her. She can vividly recall neatly refolding and restacking items and having nutzoid 'customers' come right behind her and make shambles out of things all over again. Very different than 'back home'. She quickly saw how rude Americans, old and young alike, regardless of income, can be.

Junior and Misses sections in stores around here are just lame in terms of what we're looking for and 'Petite Small' isn't much better for us. Typically, due to the what stores order, racks may have one or two things sized 'two' and under and they sell real fast. Kudos to your wife for not minding hemming a pair of jeans--I think once we 'adjust' to doing that, it'll be easier.

Hell, I used to do my own limited sewing on occasion and right now, have a button in my wallet to show my 14 y/o son how to sew it back on one of his favorite shirts.

Guys--we have been burned on luggage weight restrictions coming and going more than once and it can get pretty pricey, so tell them to forget lugging  back here their fav. sardines, mouthwash and corned beef right now --or anything glass, metal or heavy and make sure they have a few extra bucks--'just in case' they go over the ever decreasing luggage weight allowances.

They'll probably want to bring their fav. fem. hygiene cleanser--not that they need it like typical USA women, and should concentrate on bringing quality CLOTHES  that fit and at least one pair of full leather toed shoes they like, informal and for possible formal work, church occasions....

Again, if you won't be able to give them at least partial insurance covered  optical--medical care--wisdom teeth, eye glasses they'll inevitably need, consider having that done there and save a bundle.

I wish we had my wife's tonsils and wisdom teeth done there--even the co-pays we ended up paying after our insurance was more than the entire procedures would've cost there. I'd hate to see guys take the $$$ hit if they have none, or lousy insurance.

Whether you think you can or think you can't--you're right!

Put it this way:
To me when it come to the sizing, girls L/XL size is the same as petite small. Compared Disney girls XL & petite small they were the same size/fit.

Ahya want to travel light, I don't think that she will include most of these stuff with her. She initially only wanted to do a carry-on thinking that all of her stuff would fit in there. ::)
When she do pack then will see how much "crap" she have & want to bring.

Seeing how much money they can make on luggage allowance - some of the airlines have even lowered the luggage allowance & some no longer offer free allowance.

Again, if you won't be able to give them at least partial insurance covered  optical--medical care--wisdom teeth, eye glasses they'll inevitably need, consider having that done there and save a bundle.

I missed putting Ahya on my health insurance at work - I had 30 days to put her on my Health Insurance after we got married - I had to do it by August 7th. With the visa process usually taking a long time & not knowing when she would be here, I didn't include her then as I would be paying for a family plan what wouldn't be used for month. I didn't know that USCIS & NVC would be moving that quick on our case.

When she gets here I will get her temporary health insurance until I can include her on mine. The open enrollment period for me to include her on my insurance  is this coming July & I will include her then.

Last flight from Taiwan they allowed two 50lbs checked bags and a 40lbs carry-on....that's a lot of crap. Will hopefully get the same deal for her. Though now that her luggage got lost on her flight back to Taiwan there's not that much for her to bring...

40lbs for a carry on - that is pretty generous. Usually they allow 15lb to 25lbs.
I know that most of the Asian airlines do allow 2 check bags at 50lbs each & one 15lbs carry-on. They usually do not check the weight on the carry-on just the size - unless it looks like the passenger is "struggling" trying to carry the carry-on.

kfc,

My theory on luggage allowances: You are paying dearly for that luggage allowance, so why not use it?

To avoid going over allowance weight, she can buy a decent scale and weigh her own or many travel agents have accurate scales so you can bring it in their office and weigh it there before heading to the airport.

Just leave a 1-2 lb margin per bag for safety.

If she doesn’t bring her favorite personal products with her, she may kick herself in the butt later. I say fill up those bags to close to the weight limit and get your money’s worth.

BEWARE OF AIRPORT SCAMS!!

Some Philippine airport employees, especially rent-a cops at the doors, will try to rip off naïve Filipina travelers. Typically, they will check her bags and tell her that certain items are not allowed into the USA and they will insist that she leave them behind. Of course he will gladly take the items off of her hands for her (and take them home and sell them). Tell her to boldly tell any security cops trying to pull this scam to “go directly to hell, do not pass GO, do not collect 200 pesos”! And inform any such bozos that she will report his dumb arse to the authorities and have him fired.

You have to remember that in a way, their whole life is in those bags, so it's especially important to put vital papers in the carry on.

More airlines are reducing the amount that's considered allowable unpaid check in and carry on, once you fly from one international airport to another and still have to transition through another 'domestic hub' and may switch & charge you higher 'domestic rates' for what you are  carrying--but they'll sometimes switch you into paying more than when you were paying 'international rates'.

They can nail you in particular if you switch airlines once you land in the USA--this can sometimes be prevented if they stamp your bags correctly from the start.

I noticed that they're nicer to most Americans and Europeans and tend to give some Asians the 'third degree'--they've waived me by on some stuff I've seen other people charged for--especially the size and weight of carryons----it ain't fair.

Even if you're on the same Airline carrier throughout, they're increasingly greedy, so check ahead and allow some extra cash for the unexpected, including of course, for food, etc  if a flights delayed or canceled.

No crap--I heard some airlines are now considering charging $$ if you have to use the  jet's 'rest room'!!!
Whether you think you can or think you can't--you're right!

I'm kicking myself for not buying a second bag and bringing more stuff back, but we weren't really clear on what were good things to bring back. The one thing she was really concerned about is her macha tea, but costco was sold out (apparently the tea is used at a chain coffee shop and when they have their down season the producer sells the excess to Costco) Might as well use that second checked bag if you can, shipping is expensive.

Most things you can get on amazon though, and I'm sure there's a way to send a wishlist back and forth. Especially heavier stuff like rice cookers or hot water dispensers.

DEFINITELY put her important papers in the carry-on. My fiance lost her original university diploma when she flew back to Taiwan and can only get a copy now.

I would personally be fine with them charging more for bags. I paid for 140lbs of international air shipping and maybe used 50 of it, and that was with a lot of stuff from her. I think my bags were 25lbs when I flew over there.

That odd that is how my wife behaved in Manila where every rack of clothes had a girl permanently assigned to it. I had to teach her that it wasn't so in America

I personally use all my free baggage allowance. I have a luggage scale at home that I use to weigh my luggage after packing them. I would like her to fly on an Asian airline & all of those on my list do give you at least two 50lb free allowance & 15lb carry-on for economy. I would love her to bring all her favorite things & if they don't fit I have miles/point that I can use for more free luggage allowance.

Depending on which airline you you - you should get two 50lbs check baggage allowance & a 15lb carry-on allowance plus a laptop bag.
If she will travel back with you, she too gets the same allowance - so that would be four 50lbs check baggage & two 15lbs carry-on plus a laptop bag each. Plus you are also allowed to bring a jacket as extra.

My Grandparents came "off the boat" crossing the Atlantic Ocean from Ireland and Italy respectively. They could only afford to travel in the 'steerage' area which is described as follows:

>>The steerage area of the ship was once used to accommodate passengers travelling on the cheapest class of ticket, and offered only the most basic amenities, typically with limited toilet use, no privacy, and poor food. Many immigrants to the United States in the late 19th and early 20th century travelled in this area of the ships. The name "steerage" came from the fact that the control lines of the rudder ran on this level of the ship.<<

The phrase they later used  to describe their economic situation when they got off the ship and had to somehow find a place to live, literrally looking for a roof for over their heads, was "We didn't have a pot to piss in--or a window to throw it out of".

Looking for any sort of work, they instead often saw signs saying 'Help Wanted--NO Irish or Italians need Apply". This didn't stop them from embracing this nation, learning its culture, language and ways, serving proudly in its military and voting regularly. After the military, the civil service, Unions (which really served a valuable purpose then)  and eventually for my parent's generation--college, became the next rungs up the ladder to our families fortunes.

I think most immigrants today have it a lot easier.

Whether you think you can or think you can't--you're right!

No crap--I heard some airlines are now considering charging $$ if you have to use the  jet's 'rest room'!!!

Ray:

Hey, that's easy to fix... Just stand in the aisle and take a leak on the floor. That policy will chnge real fast!

Ray

That definitely gets the P-L 'Chuckle of the week' award! :D

Whether you think you can or think you can't--you're right!

Plus you are also allowed to bring a jacket as extra.
i think Delta allowed me two 67lb bags when i went in May
