Trip report Medellin
« on: October 14, 2009, 09:15:47 PM »
Hello all,

As some may know as of today the 14th I am still in Medellin.  Much has been written on the city itslef.  the only thing I have to add is I love it!   The metro, the people, the climate, todo estan rico!!  So my general report is very positive.  I would recommend this city over Barranquilla.  I have just about enough spanish now to get around without a translator.  It is very liberating.

Hotels:  I looked at many.  The first hotel I stayed at was Alcaravan.  It is cheap but not very nice.  It is old.  I was seeing a lady there so it was conveniant.  I also had a male friend from Barranquilla staying with me so it was economical for me.  Now my friend has gone back to quilla and i am on my own.  I moved to Sauces Del Estadio. So far I am in love with this hotel.  It is a brand new hotel.   very nice..  $25 a night breakfast included for a single.. everything modern.  For that price you will not find a better hotel.  very nice restaraunt,  many things within walking distance..metro etc.

Ladies: Intelligence wow!  So far they are always on time to citas.  Very patient with my spanish.  Do not ask for things.. very helpfull.  Straight forward and fairly honest.  Very different from costenas, in general.  no offense to Barranquilla fans.

Tomorrow I plan to learn the metro better.  I recommend doing so as the cabs here are expensive and things can be kind of far apart.  Also they do not always know where places are.  Ok more later but post question

The hotel is about a 7500 peso ride by taxi away from Poblado.  Not close really but not too far either.  you can also use the metro to go there aswell.  There is a mall within walking distance and some night clubs and restaraunts.  I have to say that the hotel restaraunt is very good.

No reason to ever go to Poblado. I much prefer Laureles and neighboring Belen.

You've never heard of Laureles? Have you heard of the 80 or the 33? They are closer to Estadio.

Well I am in the estadio area now.  I have heard of Obelisco.  I just learned today that I can take the metro from here to Mayorca which is a cool mall with a cinema.  The Itaquii metro lets out right by the mall.  1500 pecos gets me there.

well this thread is rather dead, however I am in the mood to write tonight. So when I started my colombian adventures I did not know any spanish and I went to an agency.  My second trip I used an agency and also did  some things on my own while started learning spanish.  Now I am on my own and barely getting by on my spanish, by next trip I should be rather fluent.
Agencys are great for meeting in numbers.  Being on your own and having more time has alot of advantages aswell.  Agencys are exciting for a short trip.  With a good agency your quite blown away.  But it also gives a sense of non reality.
When you get out there in the world on your own, the dating scene gets alot more realistic.  As far as results go I do like dating in Colombia better than in the states.  With that said finding "the one" is just as much of a crap shoot!  It is still like finding a needle in a haystack.  Keep in mind that I am too picky for my own good, but at any rate its my opinion.

Medellin is a nifty place to be.  Not as easy to meet ladies here. Approached a few in the mall and on the street.  All had novios,
or atleast that is what they said.  I wish I had made more contacts on the net prior to travel. I love the metro.  Very clean and organized.
Learning spanish is a big part of the colombian adventure for me.  I had a desire to learn spanish before I decided to travel to colombia for dating and adventure.  Anyway I hope someone finds my comments helpfull.  buenas noches.

Let me rag on you a bit ACE, but don't take it TOO personally.

Either you look terrible or your approach is sucko...I remember seeing a photo of you in the past, so I know you don't look awful!

I have heard that many ladies don't like to be approached in the mall as it can make them feel cheap or easy in front of so many other people.  I personally never was much for picking up random chicas at the mall to begin with, it just seemed to contrived for me, and I hate standing around trying to look cool

Why do you think you are so "PICKY" ? Do you feel you have so much to offer and these ladies are not worthy of you? Another option is that you just aren't truely ready.  For me, there were so many good ladies to choose from it wasn't a matter of not finding one, it was a matter of picking the best of a good bunch, but it wasn't always that way on my first couple trips I pigeon holed myself sorta like what it seems you are doing to yourself.

If you find that you are unwilling or incapable to meet women using convential methods, then why not use an agency.  Of course your Latin Cupid Website is a good idea too, if done in advance.  If some agency  is able to put a dozen women of your choice in front of you and you decide they all are not worthy without getting to know more about them, then I would say you need to give yourself more time to fool around.  Hell, why not get to know one of these attractive babes a bit more before signing off on her?  After a few days you can always move on if need be.

You just gotta keep picking at this Spanish thing.  If you are going to go solo like you are doing currently, you really should get a good handle on the language.  Force yourself into classes when you are in the states in between trips.

Ok Ace, I made some assumptions in my post to you, so don't give me a hard time if I am too far off on my comments!

cool I finally got some attention on my thread.  Well I should have said I am getting by ok on my spanish but ofcourse would like to know more.  There may be some truth to the comment about me not being ready to settle down.  By the way I did stick with one lady for almost 2 weeks.  Once I know i am losing interest I do not want to waste any more of our time.  You know Fathertime I always enjoy a little critisism.

When you feel like pulling the trigger, there will be plenty of viable options for you.  You are likely being too fussy, because you have all the options in the world.  At some point, you may decide to try something different and stick with one senorita, but meanwhile I would not put too much pressure on yourself, and enjoy the ladies and freedom while it is still fresh and you can.

I have never been so I am basically just wanting to go and meet a few ladies and have some fun. I have been talking to few over the social networking sites and webcam and such. I still havent decided which city I need to visit first. I will only have 1 week so I can only visit 1 city. Which do you guys suggest? I have limited spanish but enough to get by, I think........Mike

BTW.......Im not really interested in the really dark women but more so the light to semi dark if that makes any sense..........thanks again

Medellin's women tend to be light-complexioned. My wife's skin is pale with jet black hair and that is a common Medellin look.

Thanks.........I was thinking either Medellin or Cali. On the other hand, I would love to be near the beach so Cart. looks quite interesting but not quite sure about the women there....I think for my first trip I would probably go to Medellin and then on subsequent trips check out Cart. and Cali in that order...Is there a guide I could hook up with in Medellin for the first couple of days to show me the lay of the land until I get my bearings, places to avoid etc....? Mike
