Things to take away from Hurricane Ike.......

1. Coffee and frozen pizzas can be made on a BBQ grill.
2. No matter how many times you flick the switch, lights don't work without electricity.
3. My car gets 23.21675 miles per gallon, EXACTLY (you can ask the people in line who helped me push it).
4. Kids can survive 4 days or longer without a video game controller in their hand.
5. Cats are even more irritating without power.
6. He who has the biggest generator wins.
7. Women can actually survive without doing their hair- you just wish they weren't around you.
8. A new method of non-lethal torture- showers without hot water.
9. There are a lot more stars in the sky than most people thought.
10. TV is an addiction and the withdrawal symptoms are painful.
11. A 7 lb bag of ice will chill 6-12 oz Miller's High Life to a drinkable temperature in 11 minutes, and still keep a 14lb. turkey frozen for 8 more hours.
12. There are a lot of damn trees around here.
13. Flood plane drawings on some mortgage documents were seriously wrong..
14. Aluminum siding, while aesthetically pleasing, is definitely not required.
15. Crickets can increase their volume to overcome the sound of 14 generators. (this is very true!!!)
16. People will get into a line that has already formed without having any idea what the line is for.
17. When required, a Lincoln Continental will float, doesn't steer well but floats just the same.
18. Tele-marketers function no matter what the weather is doing.
19. Cell phones work when land lines are down, but only as long as the battery remains charged.
20. 27 of your neighbors are fed from a different transformer than you, and they are quick to point that out!
21. Hampers were not made to contain such a volume.
22. If my store sold only ice, chainsaws, gas and generators... I'd be rich.
23. Price of a can of soup rises 200% in a storm.
24. Your water front property can quickly become someone else's fishing hole.
25. Tree service companies are under appreciated.
26. I learned what happens when you make fun of another states' blackout.
27. MATH 101: 30 days in month, minus 10 days without power equals 30% higher electric bill ?????
28. Drywall is a compound word, take away the 'dry' part and it's worthless.
29. I can walk a lot farther than I thought.
30. Wow, I have some really nice neighbors!

Hey, while these things are new to you, we in Florida are quite aware  ;)

When we got hit by Wilma in 2005 I was without power for two weeks.  The most ironic thing about it is that next to my apartment complex there was a big empty parking lot - and it was lighted almost immediately!

BTW, I am heading to work to Houston.  I will work for an insurance company in the beginning, and then will switch to to work as a public adjuster, which is what I have been doing here in Florida.  Ironically, I was considering to start a public adjusting business in Houston for awhile (I grew up there and have a network), but was postponing due to difficult logistics.  Now there is going to be an opportunity.  I need to wait apparently up to two months for my public adjuster license to get approved, so I will just work for an insurance company until then.

I will miss Miami though :(  I will have to be flying back and forth a lot not to lose my clientele here.

Hey el_ruso,

Same here! There was a cluster of 5 houses in the middle of us that got power back in two days! Some of the street lights still had power, even ones that were not standing. We were without power for a month with Wilma and 10 days with Katrina. Fortunately, I bought a generator just before Katrina and had plenty of gas. I also had a camping hot shower setup.  ;D

Honey is furious.  Centerpoint Energy said originally we'd have power on Monday, then changed it to today (Thursday) and now saying maybe Sunday.  I don't think they know they are messing with a Filipina who knows how to use Tampo - she'll get mad and give them the silent treatment temper tantrum!
I finally saw electrical trucks 3 blocks from me yesterday but there are so many poles down I can't imagine them making it by Sunday.

Also DPS says over half the traffic lights in the city don't work - the traffic citywide is a nightmare.  Some guys are saying what used to take 30-45 minutes is now taking over 2 hours.

If we're having any luck at all its that a new storm in the Atlantic is pushing cooler dryer air to us making the night sweats a little better.  Its actually predicted to be 59 F on Friday night/Saturday morning.  This morning was a freezing 68F :o .

Not sure how these things are decided but the power company that handles a lot of the outer area around Houston had 55,000 people without power and brought in 14,000 techs to work on it.  Centerpoint had 1.8 million without power and brought in 12,500 to work on it.  What!! >:(

This in not my first hurricane.  I survived Carla, Beulah, Alisha and tropical Storm Allison (dropped 8 ft of water on Houston in less than 6 hours) but I've never seen one thats done near this much damage (Allison was probably the worst before this).  Galveston is 90% destroyed - they still don't have power or water,  the communities on the Bolivar Peninsula are 100% gone - they say it will be years to get power and restoration of water/sewage is unknown.  The trash pickup (clear all the trees limbs on our lawns) will take 6 months.  And after all this I have yet to meet a single person who has successfully received aide from FEMA.  The destruction has put an estimated 257,000 people out of work but I guess repairing the damages will create a lot of jobs but what do they do till then?

I was semi-prepared for a week to 10 days but today is 2 weeks and they are saying 5 more days minimum.

Sorry to hear things are taking so long to get back together there. Honey will have them on their knees soon with the tampo!

FEMA hasn't responded huh? I'm sure they're working hard thinking about how to respond about how long it is taking them to respond. Might also be worrying about their budget too as their money is probably all being rerouted to help their Wall St. pals keep their yachts, jets, and offshore accounts intact.

Keep the faith and good luck!

Hi Jeff,

I always feel so inadequate when Cuban-Americans start pulling out their big guns!  :o M-16's are common...I've seen guys with  M-60s!
