Trying To Reason With Hurricane Season
« on: September 05, 2008, 09:41:48 PM »
You would think that there was only one hurricane ever to hit the US. Unlike people in some parts of the country who are still be-itching 3 years later, we try to make some light of our situation in Florida. Florida sticks out like a sore thumb, waiting to be struck by hammer blows from hurricanes. I may have to pick things up and batten down the hatches this weekend...If I don't pass out in my hammock after drinking too many Coronas with my compadres Luis and Orlando!  ;D

Hmmm...where are all of the people talking about the recent Florida or Midwest floods?

Actually, we prepare, work together, help each other out, and don't just wait for FEMA to bring us a bottle of water.

It looks like Ike is passing to the south of us and we may have managed to dodge another bullet.

Hurricane Wilma in Southest Florida - October 24, 2005

Hurricane Andrew in Southeast Florida - August 24, 1992
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLQxjuhJ5Zc&feature=related

Death toll and wind speed totals for Hurricane Andrew were probably much higher than officially reported. Many people went to bed thinking that Andrew was going to hit 2 counties north, in Palm Beach. The wind speed was recorded at 214 MPH at Homestead Airforce Base before the wind gauges were destroyed.

Andrew VS Katrina

Hurricane Katrina made landfall as a category 3 storm, with winds around 100 mph.  Most of its damage was caused by flooding. Hurricane Andrew struck Florida as a category 5 storm with winds acceding 165 mph, which caused most of the damage. Andrew was a much stronger storm when it hit. The damage Katrina caused acceded Andrew's because of all the flooding from the levees failing and New Orleans being under sea level. The average elevation in Southeast Florida is 3 feet above sea level. Also, Andrew's heaviest winds occurred in a less populated area, 20 miles south of downtown Miami. Having experienced both, I prefer flooding to wind!
