Saw a news article a few minutes ago about the U visa. La Migra has started processing U visas this week (only seven years after they became law, those folks are on top of things, don'tjaknow). So what's a U visa? Condensed version, at least as I understood it from the article: If one is, ahem, an 'undocumented immigrant' and the victim of certain (not specified in the article, but probably enumerated in the text of the law) crimes and cooperates with law enforcement authorities and testifies against the perpetrators of the crime, one qualifies for a U visa, good for 4 years. After 3 years of living in the U.S. on the U visa, one qualifies to apply for LPR. Up to 10,000 U visas per year are authorized and (according to the article) 1 visa is good for the principal and immediate family.
Reaction appears to be mixed from 'too little, too late' from the bleeding hearts side to 'SOB's wouldn't have been victims if they hadn't been here illegally in the first place'' from the hard cores.
