I don't know any hospitals in Mindoro, mostly Manila and Cebu. I looked it up and it appears to be a small private hospital.

There is NO reason to be rude! It is hard to judge someone when you are not in their shoes! It could be a scam...or maybe not. Hard to say when you are not there or don't have someone you trust to verify it.

She could be using the name of a nonrelated patient that she knows of.

But, people do get sick here often! Several weeks ago a cousin's young son was hospitalized with dengue and typhoid fevers. He wouldn't have made without the aid of blood and monitary donations. Fortunately, his mother didn't have to beg and plead for help, as there were people who came forward!  Late one night it was feared that he wouldn't survive until morning without blood platelets. I drove my truck around like a mad man, picking up volunteers to be typed, cross matched, and donate. Filipinos will usually sit on the sides of the pickup bed and tailgate. My wife noticed they were all sitting on the floor and holding on to the sides for dear life. They were amazed that a Kano could drive like a bus or jeepney driver. If only I had a red light and siren!  ;D There have been schools closed lately here, because  students tested positive for the H1N1 virus. Today I loaned my truck for a funeral of another cousin's brother-in-law, who was only in his late 30's.

$8000 seems like an awful lot of money for that short of a hospital stay, especially if she hasn't had surgery yet.  P8000 would be more believable. If true, perhaps she came to the Internet looking for a Kano to help with the bill. She will probably find one or more.

Either way, I wouldn't make it my problem, unless we had met in person and were committed to each other.

At least you do not have to worry about paying her mother's operation

Thats what makes me think more its a scam than a need.  If it was a legit need they would have asked for what they could get, not enuff to make them rich.  She though he was plain stupid.  If she had asked for $1500 he might has fell for it so she was the stupid here.

And dudes if I should like I get upset about this stuff.  I do.  I see so many of my countrymen get just completely destroyed because they thought they were be compassionate.  Instead we are treated with total disrespect and contempt as if compasion is evil.  I personally know 3 different guys who thought they'd be helpful who lost next to everything.  I call 'em "stupids" not out of disrespect but because I was "" that close to being one myself and it really tics me off I was almost so "stupid" as to have believed it (mine was a need to pay for the last semester of college for Marichu.  Later found out she had at least one other boyfriend who was sending her money and her sister from Philadelphia was sending her money as well).

This reminds me of a similar experience I had recently.

I met a pretty Calena online and soon discovered I was actually getting on quite well with her. I call her up a couple of times and mention I am heading to Colombia soon. She told me she'd arrange with her mum so that I can stay at their place instead of having to rely on hotels, and even asked me to bring one of my guitars with me and reach her to play some rock as she shares my taste in music! Hmmm. I know Latins can be very hospitable but this is really pushing the boat out for a stranger, so i took it with a pinch of salt at first. But still - what a pleasant and refreshing change she makes from the average Calena, i thought! Maybe i have at last found a diamond in the rust 8)

Then one day when i called her up, she mentioned that when she graduates from Uni her priority is to "help" her mum. I ask her in what way, and she then told me her mum is terminally ill with a brain tumour and needs medication that's expensive in Colombia. Saddened by this, I told her I'd try to see if i could help in some way. I told her I come from a medical family and have contacts in the profession, and that I can ask around and try to get hold of something to send onto her; it seems like the very least I could do, so i thought. Well, it certainly opened up a pandora's box! The next time i called her up, she told me her mum had suffered a relapse and had to be rushed to hosptial for emergency treatment. As a result they had no money for food, their internet was disconnected and she had to give up her studies! If all that wasn't enough, she then tells me out of the blue that she had recently been for a routine mammogram where they discovered a lump that she was told may require urgent analysis and expensive treatment! And finally, just when i was beginning to catch my breath, she blew her cover completely and asked me if i could send her some money urgently that weekend by Western Union!  ::)

The moral of the story is: Praise be the Lord for all the amateur scammers who use their impatient and predictable methods of getting us to part with our money from afar! They make our lives so much easier than they otherwise could be. It's the "professionals" we really need to worry about - the ones who lie low to build up our trust in them, and then spring their "medical emergencies" on us once we have already gotten seriously involved with them! Maybe someone will open a scammer's academy to teach girls like her how to do it properly, perish the thought.. :-[

Oh, and before you all accuse me of being cold and hearltless, last time checked she was spending most evenings online on MSN, and according to her facebook account she's still studying at Uni!  :)

You aren't cold or heartless. You did the right thing not to send any money.  She is the one who is being cold and heartless for telling you fake stories about her mother.  One day, if or when her words come true, who is going to believe her!

Why would anyone accuse you of being cold and heartless?  Problem is too many of us aren't when we should have been.

I made the cold and heartless comment in jest, playing up my image as the cool and calculating type who doesn't fall easily for young Latinas' charms  8)

Seriously though, she could have given me a far worse headache if she had shown a little more patience and tried it on with me once i was dating her, or even staying with her, in Cali. She's just a "have a go" amateur, similar to the one who tried it on with the Kung Fu guy at the start of this thead. Such girls are (or should be) easy to brush aside, but there are surely worse scammers out there.

Many guys starting out on their foreign soulmate-seeking journeys seemingly ignore the golden rule #1, and this by itself encourages plenty of "have a go" scamming to continue. But as more guys become aware of the simple well-known scams, the scammers will inevitably up the ante in their attempts to con us. I hope my search for a soulmate concludes successfully before things start to get really complicated.

This is why you don't send money, at least not until you're married. A guy at work turned me on to this poem, I find it rather humorous and hope you do too. To avoid charges of plagiarism, I credit the author.

Buffalo Him Die Send Money

Lightning struck Dang's buffalo
I heard it on the news
Lightning struck Dang's buffalo
The Muslims blamed the Jews.
Dang was eating curried crab
The day was bright and sunny
She logged onto the internet
And wrote
Buffalo him die send money!
Then wrapped her pleas in lovesick sauce and
Her special brand of honey.
Hans in Berlin
Nick in Nome
Mike in London
Rick in Rome
All four told Dang
NO WAY!
But six others said
OKAY!
One could never say
Dang didn't know how to play
Percentages.
Although John in Tulsa did mention that he thought it
a bit queer
as it was the third time
one of her buffalo got struck by lightning
since the first of the year.
And Jim on Staten Island
wondered what the f was going on
with the weather up there in Northeast Lieland.
But each knew how unhappy Dang had been working in a bar
And each knew she had quit the bar
Just for him!
So it was only fair
In their view
She should have money to replace the unlucky buffaloes some of which got struck by
lightning
and even bird flu
from time to time.

Dang ate her crab curry
Seasoned with finely minced fantasies of Paris fashions and sprinkled with chopped coriander leaves.
Her Thai boyfriend ate squid salad
With lots of lime.
Both ate their bamboo worms well fried
While wire transfers made their way
Across the Cultural Divide
With lovers' dreams of yesterday.

Hey Bear,

The H1N1 virus is a major concern in the Philippines! There was 1 confirmed case in May and now the number is a few thousand. There have been a few deaths. It is estimated by health officials that 25% of the Philippine population will contract the virus. 3 or 4 schools (including the public high school) have closed in my city, after the DOH discovered 1-2  infected students in each school. The media said that there is a "panic" here. I'm not sure, because Filipinos don't panic anything like Americans and especially not like Hispanics! I go past a closed school almost every day on my walks. Some people are amazed. I tell them that all the students are gone. Potentially infected students are now hanging out at the malls and Internet cafes.

All the reports I've read about this virus is it is one of the most contagious ever.  But almost in the same sentence they say its the weakest in effect and problems.  Yet the world is in a panic cause of "potential" mutations of the strain.  Yes I know some people have died but have you ever read the USA estimate of deaths for virus' every year.  Its like hurricane season this year - it isn't happening (thanks for moving over there and taking that with ya ;) ).  I just don't see the reason for the panic yet?  To me its like this strain has eased deaths instead of causing them!?

Sorry Bear,

But, every time I am in the Philippines, Florida and the US seems to get hit by bad hurricanes! There are even "out of season" storms.
