Where can American passport holders travel to within South
America without having to obtain a visa? Brazil requires one and
there isn't enough time to obtain one on my intinerary.

Will be in Cali on the 31st and will want to leave from there a few
days later. Open to suggestions . . .warm, beautiful women,
safe...

Thanks guys.

Brazil is the only country in South America where a visa is required.  they do it because we require Brazilians to have a visa.  also they charge $100, which I believe is what we charge them.  tit for tat.

Dumb question: what is the procedure for obtaining a visa to another country?

for Brazil you simply send in an application, your passport, and $100 to the Brazilian consulate.  it is a rubber stamp process.  they do it just because we do it to their citizens.  most nations do not require a visa from US citizens.  I don't know of any besides Brazil in Latin America.

one positive is that the visa is good for 5 years and can be used for multiple visits.

Simply contact their nearest Consulate or Embassy in your home country. They will get you to fill out form(s), provide picture(s) and possibly bank details or a letter from your employer.

I am going on vacation in Chile and Argentina at Christmas.  Neither one requires a visa.  And it is summer there.

Ricky
I hope you enjoy Peru. Remember that Cusco is at a high altitude and allow time for your body to adjust. It took me and my novia about 1.5 days to feel OK up there.

There are several nice places in Mira Flores - San Isidro area. If your budget allows it just go to the Marriot.
