I am pretty amazed at all the postings about you-know-where.  I didn't know any of you listers cared.  That's OK, because I still don't think anybody on this list cares enough to actually go there.  OK, there is the one girl from Utah who went there, but for the rest of you, finding a URL on Yahoo about the bad news is not what I would consider a valid interest in the other half of Latin America, Brazil.  I especially liked the one guy's posting, asking who cares to learn Portuguese.  That was a real piece of work.

You know it's going to get worse before it gets better.  Brazil is the tip of the problem, the more we abuse the rest of the world, the more abuse we are going to suffer ourselves, each one of us.  I am not a political person, I am a lover and an artist.  But I am not blind, and when I see darkness at the break of noon, I know somebody swallowed the silver spoon.  It's a hard rain that's going to fall.  The first one now will later be last.  My advice?  Glad you asked.  Get your motor running, head out on the highway, fire all of your guns at once, and head off into space.  Wild!

And now the big question I have for everybody on this list.  What are you going to do about it?  I posted before about lifting a finger, and that I would be shocked if anybody did, make me wrong, I dare you.  By the way, mouse clicking could or might not be considered lifting a finger.  It would depend on where that click went, to which end of the rainbow.

All the TV news on Globo is about Brazilians being detained by the Americans upon arriving in the USA, as I posted before.  Nothing about Americans being detained upon arriving in Brazil.  There was a very short notice that the Brazilians are requiring fingerprints and photos in revenge, nothing more.  That means that the detention, interrogation, torture, whatever, is OK with them, if it weren't, there would be a scandal.  I want to say now that reading stories on Yahoo is like so far removed from the source that I consider it bilge and throw it overboard.  I don't have first hand news, but I have second hand news, which is about a thousand percent closer than Yahoo or the other gringo news agencies.  In my opinion.

... in response to From Brazil with love, posted by bigbdm4 on Jan 14, 2004

I have to update my last posting.  I said in that posting that all the TV news in Brazil was about Brazilians being raked over the coals upon arriving here.  Now that has all changed.  The photo of the American airline pilot with the finger is what is all over the TV news in Brazil.  Somebody posted that it was the Brazilians who fined him the thirteen thousand, but we heard that it was his own airline company that fined him.  Any clarification about that would be appreciated.

Thanks for all the postings in support of Brazil, I didn't know anybody cared about Brazil.  I can't respond to every posting personally because there are too many.  Somebody said Brazil is not Latin America, I liked that, I posted about that years ago and got a lot of opposing responses.  It is true if you ask a Brazilian.  But Brazil is the size of half of the place we call Latin America.  The reason Brazilians do not consider themselves Latin is because they don't speak Spanish, for starters, and for many other reasons.  They are very proud to be Brazilian, but this part of their culture is another story.

Thanks again

Brazilians are not latin. We agree. Now please go away, as this forum is about Latin people.

Why are you posting form Brazil on a Latin list?  Your Yahoo e-mail address is dot com dot br.  Real duh.  If Brazil is not in Latin America, then chicken ain't poultry, grits ain't groceries, and Mona Lisa was a man.

But Brazil is different from the rest, that's true, not what we would consider Latin.  Don't take it from me, don't take it from Bueller, who is hiding his identity, take it from the Brazilians, themselves.  I was going to ask if anybody on this list has ever met a real live Brazilian, but I know the answer to that.

Later, listers, I gotta go puke now, having delt with Bueller, I am sick of his or hers or its, about Brazil.

Big B

PS  Here is a treat.  Chat with the Brazilians, instead of taking nineth hand ca-ca from Bueller.  Go to:

http://chat.terra.com.br:9781/@@INDEX@@?

Click on "Idiomas" if you want to chat in English.  But be careful, those fire and passion people will come for you and want to steal your heart and love you.  I am not joking about that.

Big B I have called my Brasilian fiancee a Latina before and she has agreed with me so I don't understand where you say Brasilains will get angry? As Jeff has pointed out before, the word Latin originally came from the languages that had common dialogues with the Roman language when they had such a large empire and influenced the different groups of people.

Why am I posting to a Latin list from Brazil? You caught me, you sharpie you.

Speaking of Latin countries and ca-ca, didn't you know ca-ca isn't Brazilian? Caca here is short for Karina or similar female names, as dudu is short for Eduardo. If you want to say "poop", it's cocô. Coco is coconut, cocô is poop, so remember to put the accent on the right syllable if you ever actually come to Brazil instead of just fantasizing about it, b; it might be kind of embarrassing to order a "poop water" by mistake. Well, at least we normal people are capable of embarrassment; you can say it however you want.

And if Brazil is paradise, how come you aren't living here?

.. have to do with being considered Latin? I always thought the term Latin referred to the language spoken in the Roman Empire from which modern Italian, French, Spanish, and yes, even Portuguese was derived.

Little B went through this dance on LWL and he insists that Brazil is not Latin.  But he posts about Brazil on the Latin boards here and there.  He's not very sincere in his beliefs.

And yes, you are right.  Latin refers to the languages descended from Latin.  Portugese is as much Latin as Spanish.  Brazil is as much Latin as Colombia.

End of story.

Maybe I'm the one being stupid, but I think the concept is not that Brazil largely speaks portuguese, which is latin derived, but what a person implies when saying "she is a latina and he is a latino".

Most Brazilians I have met do not consider themselves latina or latino.  It might be a point of some pride for some who will want to clarify the differences, but not a source of terrible insult.

It would probably be the same as me, a displaced yankee living in Key West, going to Paris, and being told "Oh you are an american...you are a cowboy".  I am hardly a cowboy, and niether am I a yankee any longer.  But the concept would be lost on many people not from America.

Frankly, I think a great way to see the subtle yet significant differences in one way is to compare the pictures and self-writeups of the girls from Brazil to most other countries, espcially Colombia.  They dress differently and talk about themselves quite differently.  Very significant self-image difference I percieve.

Little b probably perceives himself as an intellectual.  Does that make him one?

A new report is out on Yahoo that Brazil is going to fine the pilot in question $13,000.  Idiots.  That move will cost them millions of tourist dollars.  The pilot will probably end up on The Letterman Show.  He should get a award.

They show a photo of him making the gesture in question.  He is holding up some document with only one finger showing on the camera side of the paper, the other fingers on the other side of the paper.  Great sense of humor in my opinion.  He can fly my plane any day.
