Ok all you seasoned vets.............
Is anyone aware of the scene in Costa Rica?  It's closer and certainly sounds safer than Colombia.  Just curious as I have never heard mention of the place on this board.

everyone remember to eat your vegetables!

I have spent some time in Costa Rica and I am now next door in Nicaragua.  Nathan and Cancunhound had some very trenchant observations.

I have been told by expats who have spent years working in Costa Rica who now work in Nicaragua, that Ticos are far lazier and more dishonest than Nicas, and more interested in ripping off Gringos.  And that is not saying much, as I do ascribe all those same attributes to Nicas.

(Language note: Costa Ricans are called Ticos when speaking of both men and women, and also Ticos when speaking of males, or Ticas when speaking of females.  But Nicas applies to all Nicaraguans regardless of gender.  There is no such word as Nico.)

I was there for vacation twice in 2003.  People seem to be nicer than they are in Mexico (where I also was twice in 2003), but that is probably not saying much.  What someone said below is true - the hotties there (including the "working girls") all seem to be from Colombia.  The biggest problem I see is that a huge number of the women are very gorda - in fact that aspect is about as bad as it is in the U.S., I'm not exaggerating.  When I was down there I heard of a gringo from Mississippi who went to Colombia, married a hottie, and then moved to Costa Rica, where he runs an internet cafe.  Similar to the guy on this board who married a Colombian and set up a yacht business in Costa Rica.

The entire population doesn't match the size of just one of Colombia's larger cities, for example.  Maybe another factor is that San Jose has an international reputation of a sex tourist destination?  Kind of hard to separate the apples from the oranges.  Not to mention that ticos in general think they're god's gift to earth.  Costa Rica has been called the "Switzerland of Central America" - many ticas would not wan't to leave.  I personally enjoy visiting Costa Rica for the safety reasons you mentioned, and yes there are some sharp ticas to be found, on your own - there's not a lot of agency options, and it's not cheap by LA standards.

Didn't "WAYNE" or "WAYNE1" from this board get tired of Costa Rica and some of the attitudes after just a brief stint running his sailing business there?

I seem to remember him saying that he made money, but only because his competitors were incompetent.

It's not a popular opinion around here with some of the guys, but I suspect there's a correlation between living standards/political stability and the percentage of the population willing to marry a foreigner and relocate.

How many MOB sites do you see with women from 1st world countries?

I think you are right, but there might be some other factors also.Per the post below Ticas don't seem to be the same quality of persons as their poorer Colombian Neighbors. The number of scam artists seems to be higher in CR.Or at least blatant presumptous scam artists.
My friend just returned from there. He said the girls did not look good in general. If you see a good one she is probably a Colombiana.

Those might be factors...another might be scamming at levels that would make a Columbian bar girl blush...I spent all of about 9 months there and came away thinking the whole country was the biggest con job in Central America.
Even its so called democracy is a farce as soon as you find out that nothing happens there outside the control of the special group of 14 families that run the place. It is the only time ever with over 60 countries under my belt, that I have ever been invited to dinner at someone's house under the cover of "friendship" and then matter of factly handed a bill after dinner stating the balance due. This happened more than once. I moved from there to Guatemala and pretty quickly figured that one Mayan is worth 5 ticos any day of the week. I suspect a lot of former expats have to take medication when they just think of the place. Give me an old fashioned bandit anytime...and by the way, the "hot" women you meet there are likely to be...from Columbia.

Granted it's safer than say Colombia, but living standards are lower and the infrastructure sucks, plus cost of living is higher.  Their GDP per capita pretty much sums it up.  I really haven't noticed a marked difference with the slums surrounding San Jose; for example, as opposed to those surrounding Cali or Bogota.  Difference I guess is that those in Colombia are predominately displaced persons due to the conflicts.

Yes, but they have political stability.  I've always seen far higher numbers of women from both Colombia and Ecuador respond to our advertising.  Both have poor economies and political problems.

I agree that C.R. is not a 1st world country.  I think it's just not bad enough to make very many people willing to leave it.
