Medellin??

Has anyone been to Medellin lately?? I just wanted to know if it is a dangerous as is being said,even by the colombianos... I stopped posting on two gringos due to the fact that forum has been hijacked by some anal-retentive know it all.... Always some interesting posts here!!

You might not be aware that there is a search function on the P-L board.  If you use that feature you can usually find lots of information on a particular subject.  I just did a search on Medellin and got a whopping 201 hits.

I also subscribe to the Latin Women's List (email forum) and there was a recent mini trip report on Medellín.  If you would like me to forward that information on to you, drop me a line.

Seeker posted something in late dec about visiting medellin on this trip to Colombia he is currently on.He wrote he would give us a report later this month from the road.Im really curious about Medellin myself.Ive chatted with women online who were from Bogota and when i mention the women of Medellin..they all have the same comment...."paisas(women from medellin and that area)are the most beautiful women in our country".I plan on going to Medellin myself and im very interested in hearing seekers report.later Charlie

Does being near it count?  I was recently on a roadtrip in the vecinity of Manizales, and we came very close to taking a left turn to check it out - only a couple of hours away.  The Colombianos I was with really spoke highly of it.  I was a little surprised that there exists a relatively safe route from Cali overland to get there.

We have a Medellín moderator over at CaliGringo.com that may be able to answer your questions.

As far as safety, Locii pointed out an article recently about Colombians returning, of which some text was:

"Government statistics show there were 684 fewer kidnappings this year. But the returnees acknowledged their homeland is essentially unsafe."

Basically, if a Colombiano tells me an area is unsafe - I take it as gospel - but that shouldn't rule out all of Medellín.
