Author Topic: American television in SA??? (NFL playoffs)  (Read 15274 times)

Anyone know if the 3 USA Broadcast networks can be seen on any cable/satellite systems in LA? In my case, I'll be in Peru during alot of the NFL playoffs. I know I could probably listen online, but was hoping there might be a satellite feed somewhere, maybe among a group of ex-pats.

Thanks for any info.

I wish I had been in South America Saturday where I couldn't watch the NFL playoffs.

I believe northern SA picks up the NA satellite feeds without problems, not to mention I would guess the SA sat feeds have the big 3 networks on them.

So it depends on exactly where you will be, and locating an ex-pat as you said.  If you were asking about Honduras, I might be able to help you.

I do not know... if you have cable down there you might be able to get
it.... the hotel  I stayed at had some cable but I do not think you  want to
watch porn. I would ask my ex wife but she refuses to talk to me at all.
She came from Peru Lima

Not a bad idea, just check around at the nicer hotels and book a night if I find one that shows the right network.

Thanks Fuzzy!

There's probably some way you could put a TV card in a computer, convert it's output to a NetMeeting signal, and have a friend here in the states transmit the games to you via the Internet, at low quality.  However, I don't know how to do it and BroadBand rates may be absurd in Peru.

Dish Network is not available for subscription south of the border, thus in essence it is perfectly legal to "pirate" the signal.  Thanks to our Canadian friends, they have perfected an easy method of doing just that.  So, if you have a location with a clear view of birds - all it takes is picking up a used mini-sattelite system on ebay, and old pc to run some software, and some additional hardware that is readily available - then bam, you can get full blown sattelite.  If anyone's interested ask over at CaliGringo.com and I can point you in the right direction for the specific steps involved, my server is UK based so I can discuss it without legal concerns there Smiley

How well does that work during major electrical storms? (Yeah I know people are supposed to shut it all down, cable or not, but come on, who does, besides me?)
Wonder what the odds of your dish getting "snatched" are?

On rare occasions large thunderheads will temporarily block reception - but I've only had that occur in the US and usually lasts a couple of minutes or so(yes I have a legal system that I pay for in the US BTW).  The rainstorms in Cali don't seem to pack the intense punch like those generated by northerns in the states.  My guess is that using the Dish system is more reliable than regular LA cable.  The dish is grounded just like any antenna and the dish itself has no black market value that I'm aware of, haven't heard of the dish itself getting "snatched" - you can see on ebay the prices are cheap.

Hey cunhound,

The thunder out North must be horrible because some of the thunder storms I've encountered in Cali were incredible.  In March and April of 2002, I stayed at Travelers Suites up against the hills in Juanambu.  It seemed like every night for the first two weeks,  the thunder came crashing down and it would sometimes go on for hours.

And the rain, when it comes, sometimes it's in bails, nothing like we see out here in California.  I remember many a time when a whole street would be a running little river.

Yes in North Texas we have some interesting weather at times - when the cool dry air from Canada meets the warm moist stuff from the Gulf of Mexico it often does it right over our head - creates some pretty nasty stuff and I've found myself huddled in hallways more than once, definitely not temperate like the downpours in Cali.  I wonder how many, if any tornadoes have ever occured in or around Cali?  I much prefer the storms there - I was in Ft. Worth when the Bank One tower downtown was clobbered by an F-2 in 2000 - not a pretty site.  Which also raises the question, which is really a safer place to hang your hat?

hhhhmmm  a US location (legally of course) pulls in the signal, records it to a private server which patches it to another private server in Columbia/Peru/Anywhere Else (same owner) that is in a private apartment over his public bar which has his private big screen TV in it so he (the owner) can watch his sports while working across the room, I mean he is semi-retired after all.
