... in response to Purpose of the Board, posted by outwest77 on Jul 29, 2001

Not Jean, not jim-in-pi's, not Carrisse.  IMO people on the board should be able to disagree, argue, back-off, reflect, calm down, reason, and apologize if necessary or choose to remain obstinate if they wish.  When someone decides to leave with the "I'm not playing in this sandbox anymore" attitude, it seems a bit childish to me.  Trolls, of course, are a different matter.

As to veterans leaving, I see it as the normal course of evolution of the board.  Old soldiers fade away and the boots who survive for a long time become the new veterans.  Life is continuous change; too much resistance to it can be a cause of unhappiness.

Married people do have less time for it, I agree.  But some, like me, hang around for certain reasons.  In my case, there are almost no Filipinas in this area and my wife had a very hard time with culture shock and life in the suburbs.  Without having met Kevin here my wife would have a few less Filipina friends, maybe none, and I think my marriage would have had a lot more bumps in the road.  Plus, we find the cyber-friendships fun.

I am grateful for what this board has to offer.  My K-1 info is becoming dated after 2 years but as I learn and grow in this marriage I aquire other experience and insight that some might find useful.  So when I think I can be helpful, I make the effort.  Other times I joke around (too much, I admit) but please realize - since being married to this wonderful Filipina lady I find that I've never been this happy in my entire life.

Gotta admit, many of the statements were backed up with web pages and data that posted for all to refute, if needed. Now some folks have left, but information exchange and ideas have still prospered.

It reminds me when Dale Ernhart died, believe it or not, the race continues.

My 15 year old immigration advice is pretty worthless and the only things I know about the Phils relate to war history and a shipyard I designed in Batangas Bay back in the 70s. I have met lots of nice folks here, though both on-line and in-person and I really enjoy hearing stories of everyone's quest for a soul mate. I guess if I were a newlywed I wouldn't find as much time - but since we're empty nesters now and have settled into a homey lifestyle, and since I have lots of opportunities at work to (as Carrisse put it) multi-task, this board can be plenty of fun. Nowhere in the FAQ does it say anything about not posting jokes, marital advice or anything else. Real married life isn't factual immigration information. It's smoothie recipies, fart jokes and anything that builds relationships. Besides, our joking around is far less apt to chase away newbys and lurkers than the Latin board's I-can-piss-farther-than-you fights or the Russian board's you're-all-a-bunch-of-losers rantings, Talk about wasted disk space and wading through the chaff to get to the wheat. Anyway, I'm not going anywhere soon - gotta find outhow some of these stories turn out!

I even going to promote my web site - SO THERE!

Hey Jim,

You joke around too much! Oooops...me too! ;oD

Things change so fast that anyone that went through the K-1 Visa process last month, now has dated information. Unless they kept current, which there is little reason to do. Those of us currently going through it are the guinea pigs. With respect to the new K-3 Visa, spousal immigration procedures are currently changing too. However, "veterans" can offer a lot of useful information, even when the technical details of the immigration process change. I have received a lot of good advice from veterans about getting started, long distance relationships, and life together after immigration. Every time I think that I understand my fiancee's culture, I discover that I overlooked important aspects.

Unexpected and most important, my fiancee and I have met some great friends here. ;oD

I spent five years in that area in the early 70s while going to Cal Poly. Used to collect abalone off the rocks by Port San Luis, clams & crabs in Morro Bay, and just about all the fish I could eat in the surrounding waters. I was sure glad to have free food so I could spend what little money on important stuff beer! Working part time for minimum wage putting myself through engineering school was a lot more fun looking back than it was at the time. LOL

Jeff,

I didn't know there was free food in the ocean. I was too busy surfing and trying not to become free food for the sharks. ;o)) I survived on Goober (peanut butter and grape jelly combined) sandwiches and beer. I made it to college when there wasn't any waves. I also worked part-time for minimum wage...at a grocery store. I worked in frozen foods section and was able to suppliment my diet with "damaged" TV dinners and frozen pizza. Needless to say, I never missed a day that I was scheduled to work.

I'll bet the better tasting ones somehow had more "damage" than the bad ones. Probably just coincidence Shocked)

Hi Jeff,

Yep, sometimes an entire case of Hungry Man (we thought they were gourmet) dinners would get crushed. ;o0 Actually, the warehouse and frozen foods delivery trucks were so bad, that they damaged more than we could possibly eat. We could usually find something among the credits and only had to save the boxes. We were usually honest and the manager trusted us.
