I just ran accross another option for transfering funds to Colombia. Your girl can open a savings account with the bank Conavi and you can deposit funds in it directly from the US by calling 1-866-842-7272. You can also watch all the account activity on the internet. The downside is it costs more than just giving her a US debit card. The upside is it costs less than Western Rip-Off Union: $50-250 costs $10, $251-$1500 costs 4%. Also she can pay her phone/electric bills at Conavi's atm machines or even have them deducted from the account automaticly. That's appealing because without this service people have to stand in line at banks forever in order to pay those bills. It's the damnedest system you ever saw!

Ya WU is a rip off. But looks like moneygram is much better. I sent 200 and it was like 12 or so.

I see you are from Vancover. Wonder if they have AFEX or DOLEX in Canada? If they do, it would certainly be cheaper for you.

Don't know how long it will last, but right now DOLEX (the place where Pete's wife works) is having a special, $1.00US to send money to Colombia, $100.00US minimum, not sure of the maximum, but I know it is over $500.00US. Also, AFEX will send any amount greater than $100.00US for 4.00% (they will send less than $100.00 if you like, but $4.00 is the minimum fee).

Oh, let me add this: Dolex gives you a little card, like a credit card, which has your data and the data of the recipient and from then on, you don't have to do the paperwork each time, you just tell the clerk the amount and let her scan the card and everything is filled in automaticaly. Afex has a similar scheme, except they use your phone number and you just tell them your phone number and their computer fills out the form for you. That way, if you can't remember your GF's name (OK, that was a joke, and not a very good one,... but maybe you don't have your notes with her address and phone number with you)
