Some guys here have talked about retiring to Cali. If you can put up with the dangers icluding the serious risk of becomming a hardened "mujeriego" (philanderer) here's what I found:

rent: 3 bedroom/2 bath house in strata 5 barrio
electric/trash/water
2 tel lines
unlimited internet
cable tv
24 hour watchman
cleaning lady 3 days a week
gym membership
best health plan (covers even when in US)

Total: $360.71 per month at current exchange rate

Actually if one had to consider retirement I would recommend looking into the Philippines. Pretty good infrustructure, good safety (for the exception of remote southern islands) and english as an official language make it a good catch. Also the cost of living is far lower than that of LA.

Is strata 5 the top strata?Electricity included?Thats a bid deal there. The phones and internet monthly fees couldn't be included could they? What is the deal with the health plan? What sort of care do you get for that?
My wifes family pays about $140 a month for a 4 bedroom 2 bath house, actually we would call it a duplex, the upper unit.Maybe 1600 sq ft.I would guess strata 3,sort of middle class. But phone and electricity can sometimes be that much each by themselves, making it more expensive than the place you mention.
Discussions like this always make me think.I have a $40,000 pension, which no way can I live on here.Seems like it takes 3 times that,4 times before taxes, which is not always easy to do.Maybe I could live like a king in Cali without working but I don't think I would be really free to enjoy myself. With safety concearns I would be afraid to just get in a car and go where I wanted like here.I do keep it in mind as a back up plan though.

Would those prices be comparable to other Latin American countries, such as Mexico, Costa Rica, Argentina?  I have heard that some Americans are retiring to Mexico, because their pension goes a lot farther there.  I would think the safety concerns would be less frightening if you pass on Colombia.

Pete,

The top strata is 6.  Ciudad Jardin and perhaps Ingenio in the South are 6's, I think Juanambu and Pinion in the North would be 6's also.  La Flora near Chipi-Chapa is a 5, the Avenida Sexta barrios (Varsalles, Santa Monica,  Granada) would be 5's also.

Pete,
I see you, Cali vet, myself and a few others from this board as neighbors in Cali a few years from now.  I really love the city. I will be going back in December.

See you in Cali,
Frank

No, you already know it isn't cheap for them. Everything is measured in SMMLV. I don't know what the rest of the acronym means but the first letters refer to "salarios min imos" which are $309.000 a month.

Transportation is super cheap unless you take taxis to distant locations and have them wait like to Hacienda El Paraiso or kilometer 18. Food/entertainment can be what ever you want to make of them. My novia is pleading for a $1360.000 gazillion watt stereo system capable of starting mudslides in the nearby Fallarones de Cali. That will be expensive entertainment because in addition I'll have to buy a $293 (dollar) round trip ticket to Quito for myself to avoid permanent hearing loss.

one thing about the latin woman, they don't open their purses for nothing except to get the make up out.

I dated a puerto rican girl once and took her out and spent $30 bucks on dinner and the tip.  this was all the money I had on me and before I had my first credit card.

I mean I had money in the bank but $30 was exactly what I had on me.  after dinner she asked me for some ice cream and I told her I didn't have anymore money and she blew up on me and told me that she didn't "couldn't" go out with a guy that is broke.

In Cali, I took a girl out and she asked me point blank to buy her a pair of pants on the first date.
